Lovely and Timely Tale

"The Lioness Pastry Cook" is unlike anything I have ever read. It is at once a tale within a tale of space people, who hear a story, told entirely in rhyme. This is an allegorical tale of how one family in Africa, after suffering misfortunes find a way not only to help themselves out of their despair, but reach outward to all (be they creatures or humans).
I think this speaks quite clearly to the need for humanity to embrace one another, and how a future society might look upon us now, with so many issues such as greed, hunger, the ongoing environmental calamity that is global warming, bigotry, religious zealotry and wonder how we will survive. It is because the story is a tale in which the family is personified by the lions, and their ability to adapt (they are running out of meat and so they start eating vegetables and fruit) that it can feel safer for humans to hear its message. This is of selflessness, and compassion, which will, if these ideals foment, create a more equal society in which all cannot only survive but live without fear or pain.
I commend Mr. La Franca for tackling these issues in a way which is both poetic in style (rather Felliniesque in its manner with the actors, dancers, drums running as narrators throughout the piece) and yet poignant. He had a purpose, which was to, without preaching as a stern task master, entertain leaving with the audience something upon which to chew. A very tasty treat indeed, I recommend this highly and ask others (since it is a very fast paced read) to re-read it to take in all its intricacies for they are sweet, sour and meaty indeed.

An enchanting and meaningful work of magic

A very original book like no other that I've ever read. Its amusing poetic style with the suggestive breaks of drumming between verses makes its reading easy to follow and also stimulates the reader's mind in imagining the scenes as they are narrated. Its endeavour of raising awareness and aid for environmental issues is praiseworthy. All summed up to me it seems a true work of magic
