In fact, until the advent of scuba diving just fifty years ago, corals have been among the last natural histories to be extensively explored. The high passion with which scientists have greeted this particular investigation --beginning with the foundational theories of Charles Darwin in 1842--is perhaps unprecedented, but hardly difficult to understand. A phenomenon of both awesome beauty and vital importance, the coral reef is home to the most diverse range of species of any environment on the planet, including fish, shrimps, worms, snails, crabs, sea cucumbers, sea stars, urchins, anemones, and sea squirts.



The crux of reef life, scientists have discovered, lies in nature's most intimate example of symbiosis: the mutually beneficial relationship between the coral polyp and its "tenant," the zooxanthellate algae. Davidson's history begins with this deceptively diminutive hybrid, the engine behind the construction of the limestone-based coral structure. Together, the three elements comprise a unique zoophytalite (animal-plant-mineral) form, or an "enchanted braid."

Aided by an eight-page, full-color photographic insert demonstrating the incredible intricacies of the reef and its unique inhabitants, The Enchanted Braid identifies the approximately 240,000 square miles of coral reef on the planet today as indispensable not only to the livelihood of the oceans but also to humans. "Coral reefs are the proving ground for mankind's ability to 'come to terms with nature'Aincluding our own," writes Davidson (The Best of Enemies: Race and Redemption in the New South), who has lived in Key West and studied coral reefs (both above and under water) for years. Davidson traveled and dove around the world to do his research. His book includes many striking facts: oceans cover 71% of the earth's surface; coral reefs are home to approximately one-quarter of all marine species; the most widely cited estimate of square miles around the world covered by coral reefs is 240,000; Charles Darwin's first scientific book was The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs (1842). And one of Davidson's most captivating chapters outlines the bizarre sex lives of fish. Despite reefs' grandeur, we humans have destroyed them at alarming rates, Davidson explains, as we have destroyed much of nature. His imaginative language (for example, "Coral reefs are the Russian novels of the sea world") and treatment of scientific terminology are impressive throughout. Not a scientist but a writer and diver, Davidson (Under Fire: The NRA & the Battle for Gun Control, LJ 5/15/93) has consulted with many scientists and other marine specialists worldwide in writing this book, whose broad scope ranges from Darwin's first views of the coral reef to the International Year of the Reef in 1997. Davidson has dived near many reefs, and his awe of this complex structure is evident. The "enchanted braid" is a double strand. The reef itself, the seagrass beds, and the mangrove forests are the larger braid, and the coral reef alone is a braid of animal (coral polyps), vegetable (algae), and mineral (calcium carbonate deposits). A great deal of science is included, although the presentation is for a general audience. Extensive footnotes and bibliography are useful for further research. This is not a light read but an informative one that covers many points of view. Davidson cares about the future of the reef environment, and this shows in his writing. Excellent read

Even if you have no prior knowledge about reefs, this book explains and makes sense of the entire reef ecosystem. I would highly reccommend it, especially for teenagers with an interest in coral reefs and thier preservation, to spark thier interest in environmental issues.

Every marine life and coral lover should read this book

I rarely read nonfiction in bed because I fall asleep too quickly. Not so with this book. Davidson's writing is compulsively compelling. Though the book details the disturbing trends affecting the health of coral reefs worldwide, it also offers hope by describing in vivid and accessible detail how corals have survived for millenia. Though they haven't survived rapidly warming surface temperatures like we're seeing today.

Davidson describes coral reefs as "the soul of the sea" and aptly describes their biology and importance to the ocean and to humankind. The book is simultaneously a travel narrative, scientific and environmental treatise, and philosophical look at why we need to take better care of coral reefs and other precious ecosystems. Though the messages in the book are clear that coral reefs are in trouble, Davidson's writing is not filled with gloom and doom and somber predictions of a coral-less ocean. By putting coral reefs in the context of survival, he inspires hope for their future. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Great book! Educational and engaging.

I have read hundreds of articles and books about coral reefs, "The Enchanted Braid" offers one of the best introductions you could ask for into the world of coral reefs. The book features both biological and historical descriptions of coral reefs as well as reporting on what is happening today to coral reefs around the world. It is clear, well written and easy for us "non-scientists" to understand. SCUBA divers, snorkelers and anyone else who loves the ocean should read this book.

Quality Lessons = Student Success

I was lucky enough to receive a complimentary copy of this fantastic resource to review. Lessons are well constructed and fully fleshed out, and as a teacher I found the detailed overview and objectives for each project especially useful and time-saving. These lessons are aligned to the Common Core, but even if you aren't teaching those specific standards these lessons still provide the high level of expectation we should expect our children to strive toward. You won't be disappointed!

This is a solid resource with ideas which show a person how to work through the steps of project based learning (PBL).

What it isn't:
- a PBL manual
- a general education lesson book
- a comprehensive curriculum

My school has been encouraging us to explore PBL, so I've done a fair bit of research and reading about it. My first attempts were okay, but I knew I was missing parts of it. When I saw this resource I thought I'd give it a try and I'm glad I did. I've got a much better understanding of the parts of PBL having looked through a bunch of examples.

I've started using the project on redesigning the school handbook and my students are all in!

I came across this when I searched for MATH based middle school PBL. While there is one page regarding different ways to represent data,this is NOT a math PBL book. Sadly will need to return.

About the Author

Dr. Tarjei Kristiansen is Head of Power Market Analysis at SN Power Brazil. Prior to joining SN Power he was a Vice President with JP Morgan in London and responsible for German and Nordic power market analysis. Dr. Kristiansen has also worked for the trading company RBS Sempra Commodities, the utility Statkraft and KEMA Consulting in its markets and regulation team. Dr. Kristiansen holds an MSc in Physics from the University of Oslo and a PhD in Electrical Power Engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He completed the Fellows Program at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. His PhD focused on risk management associated with transmission congestion including financial transmission rights.�He frequently publishes papers on European electricity markets, modeling and financial transmission rights in the US. When he is not analysing and modelling electricity markets, he spends time jogging or reading finance. He can be reached at�Tarjei_Kristiansen_2003@alumni.ksg.harvard.edu.

Juan Rosell�n is tenured Professor at the Department of Economics of the Centro de Investigaci�n y Docencia Econ�micas (CIDE) in Mexico City, and Senior Researcher at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW-Berlin). He has been Visiting Professor at the Technische Universit�t Berlin (2010-2011), the Technische Universit�t Dresden (2007-2010), and the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University (2002-2005). Professor Rosell�n has published extensively on incentive mechanisms to regulate restructured electricity and natural gas markets, including price-cap methodologies to promote infrastructure investment and addressing strategic behavior by participants with market power. He is member of the Editorial Board of Economics of Energy & Environmental Policy, and is the Editor of Econom�a Mexicana, Nueva �poca. Professor Rosell�n has been awarded with a Marie-Curie Fellowship from the European Union (2012), the 4th Reimut Jochimsen Prize by the Deutsche Bundesbank (2009), a Georg Forster Fellowship by the Humboldt Foundation (2008), and a Repsol-YPF-Harvard-Kennedy-School Fellowship (2003). An Easy-to-Understand Guide to Investing Strategies

This dual authored 249-page book McGraw-Hill paperback covers different investment styles. It is divided into 10 chapters and includes a 15-page appendix of on-line investing resources, and 100 useful Websites, as well as a 9-page glossary. One unique feature is the inclusion of Psychological Quotient (PQ) Charts that can help readers ascertain their investment style and, thereby increase their odds on selecting the most appropriate investments.
The authors put forth the theory that if an investing strategy does not fit a person's personality that he/she will not stick with it for very long. Therefore, they provide a selection of currently used investing strategies together with the personality traits needed to execute the strategy successfully.
According to the authors, the investing process encompasses stock selection, timing of entry and exit points and portfolio management (asset allocation, number of holdings). However, they point out that the strategies for picking investment vehicles depends upon the investor's style of investing.
The authors point out that if an investor can use a systematic investing approach while maintaining discipline that he can more than double the annual return compared to random investing.
The authors created PQ charts. They rate each investment style on a scale of 1 to 10 for each of ten personality traits. These traits are: discipline; patience; risk tolerance; reward expectation; volatility tolerance; time horizon; time commitment; quantitative skill; charting skill; and investing confidence.
Nine specific investment styles are reviewed. The four major styles are growth (high risk/high reward); value (hunting for bargains); momentum (where the action is); and technical investing (using charts). There is one chapter on each style and together they cover 100 pages and are the heart of the book.
Each chapter follows the same format by providing the PQ chart personality rankings, anatomy of the types of stocks that fit that category, chart patterns of these stocks, how to screen for stocks, checklist of questions on evaluating stocks, exit and entry strategies, portfolio strategy, a case study, stock chart evaluation checklist, on-line resources, and helpful hints.
Five minor investing styles are portrayed in a separate chapter. They include: fundamental investing (balance sheet review), income investing (dividend payers), hybrid investing (combining styles), active trading (day traders, swing traders, position traders), and style surfing (style now in vogue).
Also provided are market capitalization strategies. Those covered include: large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap strategies. A few advanced strategies are briefly discussed. They include short-selling, market-neutral investing, index trading, option hedging, and global investing.

I highly recommend this book to new investors, as well as those who don't have a clue as to what they should be focusing on.

I have read this book cover to cover. I have also read 2.5 other starter books. This is by far the best one. You will not be ready to make millions after this read, but you wouldnt be after only one book anyways. Some other books I have read are Bill o'reillys how to make mony in stocks. This book is much better for a non biased oppinion, O'riellys book seems more concerned with trying to sell you his strategy and in turn investors businness daily. My only criticm is that it doesnt go to in depth about any one strategy, it is more of in intro to all of them. This is exactly what is needed for a first book however and thats why it gets five stars. Be prepared to buy another book after this one sparks your interests. Be cautious about other books that try to get you all hyped up and ready to lose alot of money proclaiming themselves as the holy grail.

Excellent overview

This book will get you to think about what investment strategy is right for you and provide you with the resources to start developing a plan. The subtitle tells you the contents: "The Key to Getting Started." It's meant as a guide to lead you in the direction that suits your personality. It's nice and compact and the writing is very clear. Also, the book provides great resources for the next step (though some of these may be outdated; I haven't checked them all). Amazon's recommendations based on who looked at this book are excellent, too. As the authors point out, having a strategy, any strategy, complete with rules, is better than no strategy at all, and this book will help you think about what strategy is best for you. There are many successful investors for each style, so don't buy into the idea that buy and hold (or buy and hope as some would say) is the only way to go. The most important thing is to have a plan and then have the discipline to trade the plan.

Great book of visually pleasing cookies

I initially checked this out of my public library. But I eventually felt I used it and kept it for so long that I had to have my own copy. It has beautiful and colorful pictures that make a great display for a kids parties.

Marrying Her Enemy: It was love at first...

When Rosie meet Luca there was on instant love connection from both. But Luca had a lot riding on winning Rosie in marriage. His secrets would devestate her. He was a man on a mission to win her over. He also was a man made of vengence for the wrongs done to him by his parents. Can Rosie melt his heart with love? This was a emotional read. Both had so much to gain and loose. Have enjoyed reading books by Clare Connelly.

I am so happy I r e ad this story. Yeah this is the 1st book in the series and I read it 2nd. It was great none the less. After finishing Maggie's story, I just had to read Rosie's. And I'm very glad I did. Wonderful HEA ending!

Another good romance!

A great writer that holds your interest making it hard to put the book down except for sleep or going to the bathroom! I recommend this author's books to anyone who enjoys romantic books with a little suspense thrown into it.
