Picasso From Nineteen to Twenty
By Kenneth Hughes
This is the catalogue accompanying the similarly named exhibition at London's Courtauld Gallery from February to May 2013, which presents eighteen major figure paintings from the year in which Picasso turned twenty. To concentrate on one year in the life of an artist whose active career spanned almost eighty years, and to consider only eighteen of what is estimated to have been almost 250 works (oils, pastels, and realized drawings) he created in that year, may seem like far too narrow a focus to yield much critical understanding. But the opposite turns out to be true; 1901 was such a significant year for the artist that an examination of even just a sampling of his work reveals much that is valuable for understanding his later development and, indeed, his lifelong practices. Picasso's first visit to Paris in the previous year was a kind of testing of the waters, but when he returned in May 1901, he had to face two very stark realities. One was the fact that his good crony and erstwhile traveling companion, Carles Casagemas, had in the meantime committed a particularly dramatic suicide over an unrequited love affair, and the second was that Picasso was about to get his first big public show at the galleries of Ambroise Vollard and he had to produce work to put in it. This exigency seems to have displaced his coming to terms with his friend's death, and in the next five or six weeks he produced most of the sixty-four paintings that Vollard exhibited. These are paintings with the open and broken brushwork that had been the touchstone of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, works in which Picasso confronts, absorbs, and subsumes the styles and subjects of the modern French tradition that stamped the Parisian art-world of the time. His evocation of the gaiety and decadence of the Belle Epoque was so striking and successful that the Parisian art press even spoke of a "Spanish invasion," and the critics were confounded when, instead of continuing in this winning vein, he reinvented his style even in the closing days of the exhibition, greatly muting his palette and adopting sombre, even melancholy themes, possibly finally feeling the emotional effect of Casagemas's suicide. Now come the more contemplative and timeless, more measured and carefully composed works with a mournful tinge: the series of absinth drinkers, of harlequins, of mothers with children--some with an anticipatory blue tonality that becomes more prominent as the summer wanes to autumn and he starts to paint what we now see as the precursors of the Blue period soon to come. "The Blue Room (The Tub)" from the late summer (The Phillips Collection) can be seen as a convenient marker of the transition. And now come also the three paintings he made of his dead friend, the existence of which he concealed until the compilation of a catalogue raisonn of his work sixty years later. As he reportedly said, it was the death of Casagemas that started him painting in blue. The difference in the two styles is reflected in the division of the installation in the two smaller rooms on the Courtauld's top floor.

In sum, 1901 is an extremely important, even pivotal, year for Picasso. It sets patterns for his entire artistic future, from the relatively minor (his adoption of the trademark "Picasso" signature that is now so familiar and that seems to be his signal that his creative identity is now set) to the major (the volatile mutability of his style will be a characteristic of his entire oeuvre from now on). These patterns are expertly exemplified by the eighteen full-page catalog reproductions in fine color and clarity. They are accompanied by some sixty additional illustrations, many also full-page or half-page, and by excellently informed and clearly written annotated commentaries by Barnaby Wright, the Courtauld's Senior Curator and the volume's editor, who also contributes a comprehensive introduction. There are also three essays by Picasso scholars that deal with topics ranging from Picasso's practice of painting over existing canvases and its implications for his own sense of development; to the conceptions of "genius" that coalesced around his painting and his person; and the Nietzschean intellectual atmosphere that informed his most ambitious painting of the year, "Evocation (The Burial of Casagemas)." I found these all to be very enlightening. The book closes with an appendix that consolidates earlier research and makes important new suggestions in the attempt to match the Vollard catalogue descriptions to actual works (a feature that will make the catalogue particularly valuable to scholars and art historians) and with a brief but useful bibliography of frequently cited works. There are so many Picasso books that one has to be very selective in choosing what to buy--or even read--but this is one I can recommend highly; it casts good light on this period in Picasso's life, and in gathering together important paintings from many far-flung collections, it is an excellent resource and a valuable contribution to understanding his formative years.

Informative book written for specialist or academic readers in Picasso's 1901 work, but helpful for general readers too.
By 2215bee
This book, as it's title would indicate, is about only one year in Picasso's working life. The year is 1901, when he had just come to Paris to seek out a place for himself and his art in that very important metropolis. The book's first couple or three chapters are informative and interesting, and useful to anyone interested in Picasso's early years.

I should say at this point that I bought the book months before I read it, and only decided to read it after seeing the Picasso sculpture exhibition at MoMA.

Early on in the book, the important role of Carles Casagemas and his suicide for Picasso's development is discussed. The idea that the event of Casagemas' suicide impelled Picasso to take a more "original" approach to his art, as distinct from what he had been doing before (painting canvasses heavily reliant upon, or derivative of, the art of Toulouse-Lautrec, Delacroix, Van Gogh, Degas, and others) is advanced. The suicide hit Picasso very hard, according to at least one of the authors included in this volume, and essentially resulted in the makings of Picasso's Blue Period.

Another chapter -- and an interesting one at that -- deals with Nietzsche's influence on the times in which Picasso painted, and via a strange and rather loathsome character named Pompeyo Gener, on Picasso's "circle" in Barcelona (I think?) and of course, Picasso himself. I do not want to talk about Gener's Catalan anarchism, because of its similarity to outright fascism, and my disinclination to describe a topic that is handled well by the author of this topic in the book itself.

The last chapter in this short book is devoted to the notion of genius, as far as I can make out. I did not give this chapter its fair shake, due to its account of the rejection of the concept of "genius" in modern writers such as Walter Benjamin, who had some strange ideas (which I will admit to not understanding, because I have never read the essay "On the Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" where Benjamin's encounter with the notion of "genius" takes place.) I read a few pages of the chapter, got frustrated, and stopped there. My reasoning is simple: I hold that Picasso WAS a genius, pure and simple. And I am just not interested in "problematizing" "interrogating" or doing anything else about Picasso's genius, other than acknowledging it. There is an extremely funny quote from Georges Braque about Picasso in late life, though, which almost made the bit of reading in this chapter worthwhile: "Picasso used to be a very good painter; now he's just a genius." (!) The meaning of this quote will be clear to anyone familiar with the hagiography surrounding PP, once his reputation was solidified.
Because I didn't finish the chapter, I will leave things there, and let other readers decide for themselves on its value.

There is a selection of plates with good detailed descriptions, drawn from Picasso's work in 1901.

There is also a list of paintings shown in Ambroise Vollard's show, in which Picasso participated, also in, you guessed it, 1901.

Well thought out
By Charles L. Zimmermann
This was a well thought out book; I was required to purchase it for an Estimating College course, and found it to be self explanatory. This would be an invaluable book for any contractor wanting to improve their estimating abilities, and a must read for general contractors looking to refine their bidding techniques.

Estimating in Building Construction (6th Edition) (Purchased on 01/26/2010) by Frank R. Dagostino
By K. E. Schwartz-McGady
The book itself is OK, given that it covers a dry but vital subject if one wants to do construction. On the other hand, it could be better written and the questions could be better framed.

He'll go through incoming mortars, he'll see the enemy alive. EXCELLENT VIETNAM WAR NOVEL WITH TIMELY TWIST
By Tyler R. Tichelaar
Donald Bodey's Vietnam War novel F.N.G. is a powerful, engaging story about one man's tour of duty. While many Vietnam Veterans have come forward in recent years to tell their stories, Bodey chose not to write an autobiographical account, but specifically, a novel based on his experiences. While few ex-soldiers could masterfully write a novel of war, Bodey's skill has created for the Vietnam War what Erich Maria Remarque accomplished for World War I in All Quiet on the Western Front.

At the center of Bodey's novel is Gabriel Saunders, the "F.N.G." (F---g New Guy). Gabriel has been drafted into the army, and when he arrives in Vietnam, he is scared and unsure of himself. To make matters worse, he has the horrendous experience of seeing his newly made friend killed before his eyes the first day he arrives. From there, the reader is taken through Gabriel's tour of duty over the course of a year as he matures as a soldier, going from being the new guy to the leader of his squad. Vietnam soldiers were transitioned in and out of their units, rather than all arriving together, so as new soldiers came in, old soldiers left, thereby continually rotating so the squad always had some seasoned soldiers and some FNG's. The effect of this rotation is new soldiers having more experienced ones to learn from, but it also means seasoned soldiers are the envy of new ones. Bodey emphasizes the psychological weight of their remaining time on the soldiers, who always knew to the day how much time they had left, and how they pondered their chances of surviving a certain number of days.

This 2007 publication of F.N.G. is Loving Healing Press's revised and expanded version of the original 1987 novel. The revised edition's major change is the immensely effective opening chapter of the novel, set in the present day during the War in Iraq. In this chapter, Gabriel, returned from Vietnam for over thirty years, is going hunting with his grandson, Seth. Gabriel is angry that his grandson will soon be leaving to serve in Iraq. Gabriel knows war's horrors and does not want Seth to have the same traumatic experiences. Unknown to Seth, Gabriel is contemplating shooting his grandson--just enough to wound him so he cannot be sent to Iraq. Gabriel would rather see his grandson limp the rest of his life than suffer the far greater psychological and physical hell of war. That a man would intentionally hurt his grandson as a way to protect him is far more than a clever plot device. It makes readers consider whether in Gabriel's shoes, having undergone his own war experiences, they would not do the same to protect a loved one.

I will not spoil the story by revealing whether Gabriel goes through with injuring his grandson, but after reading the rest of the novel, Gabriel's motivations are clearly understood. While F.N.G. does not have much of a plot, its strength lies in its descriptive, realistic character depictions. The details of a soldier's life are presented with gritty realism intermixed with humor. The reader comes away with a real sense of the camaraderie so vital for survival among soldiers. The novel's dramatic conclusion provides a strong example of how war affects a soldier. While post-traumatic stress disorder is a term well known today, few authors have portrayed it so effectively; Gabriel comes to realize something has changed within him, something he cannot yet define but which he knows will haunt him. Donald Bodey, himself a Vietnam soldier, has captured his personal experiences in fiction, never seeking to be sensational or sentimental, but rather to depict the Vietnam War realistically. The author [...] provides additional information about F.N.G., including a glossary of Vietnam War terms.

F.N.G. is a book everyone would benefit from reading, especially families of military men and women, so they will understand what their loved ones go through. Members of the US military and US government should also read it to understand what happens to those the government sends to war, especially wars where it is questionable whether the United States should be involved. Very few war novels would receive such a recommendation from me.

War is Hell in this Nam Novel!
By W.H. McDonald Jr.
Author Donald Bodey has crafted a true Vietnam War classic that captures what being a grunt was all about. His revised novel " F.N.G." has even added a new twist to the old war novel genre as the book's hero considers shooting his grandson - thus wounding him and preventing him from going off to this war in Iraq! The whole book is fresh, which is very difficult to do considering all the books, and movies that have been written on the war in Nam.

Bodey has a writing style that makes even something as simple as the rain falling feel real. He has created drama and great entertainment in this thrilling fictional account of war that often at times, feels as if you are reading someone's autobiography.

Readers may find their hearts beating a little faster, or a experience a moist eye, or even feel a slight pang of fear creeping up their spine while devouring this book. It flows with both action and powerful emotions. This is the kind of book that could become a huge Hollywood blockbuster as a movie. This book is really that good!

If you were only going to read just one novel about the Vietnam War then this would be my choice and my recommendation! It is a most compelling account and will not an easy book to forget or put down.

FGB
By Allen L. Peters
I read this book when it first came out in the 80's, liked it then and having reread it, like it even more now. I will have to admit that I know the author, but if I didn't like the book, I wouldn't write a bad review, I just wouldn't write anything.

I think this is a F&^%*# Good Book. First person is tough to make work for an entire novel, and Don's editor/publisher tried to have him abandon it until they read further into the book. It is a straight forward and honest novel with truth on every page. It is not a political tract which only increases both its truth and honesty.

One thing I especially like are Don's metaphors. They are wonderfully descriptive and within the voice of a house painter/draftee. They help make the strangness of war part of the reader's everyday as it became so for the protagonist, Gabe. The new introductory story is of a piece with the original book, and I hope Don works this story into another novel.

If you haven't yet, buy and read this book, but even if you bought and read it before, do it again. You'll thank me for the suggestion.

Physics: The Ultimate Adventure (Undergraduate Lecture Notes in Physics), by Ross Barrett, Pier Paolo Delsanto, Angelo Tartaglia

This book explains -in simple terms and with almost no mathematics -the physics behind recent and glamorous discoveries in Cosmology, Quantum Mechanics, Elementary Particles (e.g. Higgs bosons) and Complexity Theory. En route it delves into the historical landmarks and revolutions that brought about our current understanding of the universe.

The book is written mainly for those with little scientific background, both college students and lay readers alike, who are curious about the world of modern physics. Unsolved problems are highlighted and the philosophical implications of the sometimes astounding modern discoveries are discussed. Along the way the reader gains an insight into the mindset and methodology of a physicist.

Comprehensive book, a little bit dense
By Ken
I have mixed feelings on this book. I was looking for something a little deeper than like a Stephen Hawking book that's written for the masses and has no math in it. But also looking for something easier than a college physics text book. I wanted to read and enjoy the narrative as well as understand the math, versus grinding through equations with a calculator.

But here's the trouble...once you start introducing the math, it gets complicated because the math IS complicated. This book covers a great number of physics topics and in many cases includes the core equations. That's what I wanted! Since its not meant to be a text book, though, the authors avoided describing the math in detail. With too many giant leaps in the explanation of the math, its just impossible to really appreciate how the math was derived.

The narrative sways back and forth from common, readable language that most readers can understand to very dense, technical reading with five syllable words I've never even heard of. I have an engineering degree, masters degree and read a lot of technical material and found myself struggling to follow along in parts that I felt could have been greatly simplified. The authors are probably too advanced to translate in simple enough terms.

So its definitely not a 5 star book. I would probably want to give it a 3 because i'm a little frustrated. But I feel like the authors genuinely want to share their passion for physics and certainly took a lot of time to assemble the book. So i'm going to give it a 4.

If I had to share advice if this book gets revised, consider fewer topics and spend more time on each. AND have a "normal" person translate the book into more digestable language for the common reader.

The Confidence Gap: A Guide to Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt, by Russ Harris

Too many of us miss out on opportunities in life because we lack self-confidence. Whether it's public speaking, taking on a leadership role, or asking someone for a date, there are situations in which we just don't feel equipped to handle the challenges we face.

Russ Harris offers a surprising solution to low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity: Rather than trying to "get over" our fears, he says, the secret is to form a new and wiser relationship with them. Paradoxically, it's only when we stop struggling against our fearfulness that we begin to find lasting freedom from it.

Drawing on the techniques of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a cutting-edge form of cognitive-behavioral therapy, The Confidence Gap explains how to:

•Free yourself from common misconceptions about what confidence is and how to build it
•Transform your relationship with fear and anxiety
•Clarify your core values and use them as your inspiration and motivation
•Use mindfulness to effectively handle negative thoughts and feelings.

Review
“This book could save you years of psychological struggle, yank you out of negative emotional patterns, and help propel you to a much happier, more productive life.”—Martha Beck, author of Finding Your Own North Star

“An exciting alternative to the usual approach of so many self-help books. Harris explains how we can work with ourselves as we are, rather than aggressively trying to alter ourselves. I’m impressed by the simple and effective methods of ACT.”—David Richo, PhD, author of How to Be an Adult in Relationships

“One of the most hopeful (and helpful) messages we can take away from this book is this: we can learn to do the things that matter, even when our minds say it’s not possible.”—Spirituality & Health

About the Author
Dr. Russ Harris is a physician, therapist, and speaker specializing in stress management. Must read for overcoming doubt and fear!
By Barbara S. Reeves
Ah, just as I suspected: all that think-positive-Pollyanna-drivel is poppycock. According to Russ Harris, author of "The Confidence Gap", we evolved to think negatively. A hundred thousand years ago, if you weren't on constant vigil for dangers like lions, tigers, and bears in your environment, you didn't live very long, certainly not long enough to pass on your Pollyanna genes.

So thinking negatively is ingrained in us, and I'm happy to hear that because I sure was getting sick and tired of those Stuart Smalley daily affirmations.

"The Confidence Gap" is a guide to overcoming fear and self-doubt. As a recovering drug addict it's important, very important for me to learn how to deal with fear, because I always dealt with this problem with drugs and "liquid courage." That was my solution for overcoming low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity.

Hellen Keller said that life is a daring adventure or nothing. If we're stifled by fear then our life will certainly be nothing. We'll stay stuck in our comfort zones as life passes us by. Harris lists four common reasons why we're afraid to leave our comfort zones:

1. Obstacles - our minds point out all the obstacles.
2. Self-judgements - our minds point out all our weaknesses.
3. Comparisons - our minds compare us to others who seem to be better than us.
4. Predictions - our minds predict failure.

Before I published my book, I thought it would be the greatest thing I'd ever accomplished, but as soon as it came out, I was attacked by self-judgements. I thought what I'd written was stupid, and of inferior quality, and I almost regretted doing it.

Even worse, I had to write for this website. Every time I wrote something and posted it, I would wake up in the middle of the night berating myself, "Stupid, stupid, stupid. I can't believe I wrote that." I wanted to give up. I discovered that I was "fusing" to these thoughts. That's all they were: thoughts. They were not based on fact, and if they were, so what?

Don't I have the right to say stupid things and make mistakes? So I continued to write and consider it all practice, because there's no way I'll ever get better if I don't continue to plug away. I "defused" from those negative thoughts. They still come up every time I write something, but now I can say, "There's that stupid, self-judging thought. Bye-bye stupid self-judging thought." So I was glad to read this quote from best-selling author Peter Carey in "The Confidence Gap": "Writing is being prepared to be stupid and make mistakes."

There's a lot more useful information in "The Confidence Gap" including Harris' golden rule for winning the confidence game: "The actions of confidence come first; the feelings of confidence come later." There are nine more rules, so instead of listing them here, I'll recommend you buy the book and discover them yourself.

I really enjoyed reading this book.
By Brian Johnson
[[VIDEOID:18c79efd87835e012354485673fdb373]] “Whether you call it ‘lack of confidence,’ ‘fear of failure,’ ‘performance anxiety,’ or ‘self-doubt,’ the chances are it’s cost you dearly in your life. Take a moment to consider: What have you given up? What have you missed out on? What opportunities have you lost because of it?

Over the years, I’ve worked with literally thousands of people who have put their hopes, dreams, and ambitions on hold because they ‘don’t have enough confidence.’ And the sad thing is, this lack of confidence is not due to any fault of their own. It is certainly not because of stupidity, or laziness, or negative thinking, or a deprived childhood, or a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is simply because they do not know the rules of the confidence game. ...

On your journey, you’ll discover a revolutionary new approach to maximizing human potential: a model of change that is firmly based on cutting-edge research in human psychology. And you’ll learn to develop a mind-set known as psychological flexibility—a powerful mental state that enables you to respond effectively to fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. You’ll also learn to develop genuine, lasting self-confidence. And you’ll learn to enhance your performance in any area of your life—from sports, business, and creative arts to socializing, parenting, and sex!”

~ Russ Harris from The Confidence Gap

Russ Harris is one of the world’s leading authorities on one of the most cutting-edge forms of therapy known as Acceptance and Commitment Training, or ACT for short (pronounced like the word act not A.C.T.).

ACT is essentially a powerful blend of mindfulness training and cognitive behavioral therapy. I’ll be covering Russ’s first book (The Happiness Trap) soon where he provides a general intro to it.

This book is, as you probably guessed by now, all about helping us optimize our confidence. Russ basically tells us that we’ve been following the wrong rule book if we want to dial in our confidence. He presents 10 rules on how to win the game of confidence we’ll explore in the Note.

I'm excited to share some of my favorite Big Ideas:

1. Confidence Gap Defined - Thinking that feelings precede action.
2. 10 Rules - For winning the game of confidence.
3. Defusion + Workability - Two very important words.

REDUNDANTLY HELPFUL
By robomacman
I judge the impact of a book by the amount of index notes I create on the very first pages of the book for quick review. My list is a two pages long. I purchased the book to read about the concept regarding FEAR and DARE, but I got so much more out of this. My understanding of confidence has expanded beyond Belief, Knowledge and Skill as I typically understood it. My behavior quite often fell into "have to feel confident first, then act" despite the desire to take action despite how I actually feel. I will now be better equipped to take Action in the midst of those negative, anxious feelings because I now know how to much better deal with them so I no longer stay Fused with them.

One of the best redundant things I like about this book is that he continually emphasizes that we all have the negative, anxious thoughts. I think, at least for myself, I have viewed my negative, anxious thoughts as an indicator that I am not ready or that they will overwhelm me. The concept of Notice, Name, Neutralize isn't new for me as I have read various forms of it over the years. However, the author's redundant emphasis on Acting in the midst of the feelings and the techniques he provides will be very helpful for me. I am looking forward to what new doors will open as I learn to not let my fear block me from Acting in accordance of my values and goals.

From Booklist
As 17-year-old Kestrel comes to know Arin, the Herrani slave she purchased on a whim, she puts both herself and him at risk. Arin, 19, also finds himself falling for this daughter of the Valorian general who conquered his homeland. A Herrani uprising briefly reverses their roles of owner and slave until the Valorian empire prevails, and a last-minute compromise by Kestrel may save Arin’s life—but it will make it impossible for them to be together. A refreshing change from supernatural and problem novels, this fantasy is pure romance (not sex) elevated above genre stereotypes by a talented author who understands pacing and satisfaction. Full-bodied characters explore issues of loyalty, class, and values (for example, arts versus military strengths), without sacrificing any of the relationship-related tension that is a hallmark of this kind of story. A tasty twist of an ending virtually locks readers in for subsequent entries in the series. Fans may want to revisit this one while they wait for future books; maybe get more than one copy? Review

“*[A] spellbinding first book in a trilogy about a pair of star-crossed lovers in a society marred by class warfare....Like any epic page-turner worth its salt, Rutkoski's richly imagined world is full of dynamic repartee, gruesome battle scenes, and shifting alliances. A high-stakes cliffhanger will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next book.” ―Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW

“*Rich characterization, exquisite worldbuilding and rock-solid storytelling make this a fantasy of unusual intelligence and depth...Precise details and elegant prose make this world fresh and vivid. The intricate and suspenseful plot, filled with politics, intrigue and even graphic violence, features neither heroes nor villains; every character displays a complex mixture of talents, flaws and motives...Breathtaking, tragic and true.” ―Kirkus Reviews, STARRED REVIEW

“*A forbidden romance. The romance is heartstoppingly lovely and admittedly steamy . . . but the raising of stakes and the reluctance of the couple to give up their respective cause, even as they confess their love for each other, lends their relationship a complexity not often seen in the genre . . . A last-minute compromise between the lovers secures a sequel, and fans of Kristin Cashore and Robin Lefevers will be pleased to have a new romance to follow.” ―BCCB, STARRED REVIEW

“Every line in The Winner's Curse is beautifully written. The story is masterfully plotted. The characters' dilemmas fascinated me and tore at my heart. This book gave me a rare and special reading experience: I never knew what was going to happen next. I loved it. I want more.” ―Kristin Cashore, New York Times bestselling author of the Graceling Realm books

“The Winner's Curse is breathtaking, a lyrical triumph in YA fantasy. Marie Rutkoski writes with tremendous power and has created an epic of fearless beauty. This book should not be missed.” ―Ann Aguirre, New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of the Razorland trilogy

“The Winner's Curse is magnificent. Gorgeous writing graces every page, and the story of Kestrel and Arin unfolds with all the complexity and beauty of a sonata. I was completely transfixed by them and their world.” ―Sarah Beth Durst, author of Conjured

Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him--with unexpected consequences. It's not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. What I Liked:

Let me be clear: I most likely will NOT be doing this book justice, with this review. I loved this book so much, and I already know that I cannot express just how much I love this book, or everything that I love about this book, in one review. But I'll try.

This is more of a fantasy novel than anything. I saw on Goodreads that there are labels such as "science fiction", "dystopia", and "historical fiction". The first two are really off, but this book does have historical elements - like, medieval elements. But it isn't set in a real historic period, if that's what people are thinking. It's fantasy - epic fantasy - like Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo.

Kestrel buys a slave on a whim, and everything kind of goes downhill from there. This slave, Arin, is part of a rebellion that is trying to start a revolution. Kestrel slowly develops a bond with Arin, but she has no idea that she has been played - that Arin and his group of rebels planned everything. And the revolution is happening.

I can't really explain the plot of this book, but it is so intriguing and twisting and engaging and interesting! everything is strategic and analytic and set in the story for a reason, for a specific purpose - even if readers don't see it at first. I LOVE this type of book, because I'm the really analytic type, so I enjoy figuring out puzzles and mysteries and looking for things beyond what is told or mentioned. Fun!

The book is indirectly split into two parts: the beginning is about Kestrel and Arin - and this has very little to do with romance or chemistry. YES, in this time, they develop a strange friendship, because Kestrel insists that he be honest with her at all times. Kestrel begins to depend on him and his opinion, and takes him as her escort to many places. The first part of the book is spent building their relationship, as well as their characters. Rutkoski does this very thoroughly, in a subtle way.

I really like Kestrel's character. She is clever, and in many ways. She has a mind for the military and political maneuverings. She is cunning and brave, even though she is not good with hand-to-hand combat and other forms of fighting. She thinks things over many times, and is rarely wrong. I like her. She is not soft, but she is kind to those she trusts and care about.

Back to the plot. The second half of the book is about the revolution. I won't be too specific, but basically, the second half of the book deals with the revolution and Kestrel's role in the revolution. I feel like we get to learn more about Arin in this section of the book, and we get to see who he really is. I find that even though he is a rebel, and on the opposite side of Kestrel, he is a good purpose. I can't see him as a villain. Rutkoski is a genius, because she has spun this story to make readers love both the heroine and the "villain".

So, I really liked Kestrel AND Arin. And I love their relationship. Rutkoski has their relationship develop differently from most YA relationships. They are only physically intimate TWICE in the whole book (i.e., the yonly kiss twice), and yet, I find the romance absolutely beautiful. This is a great example of how romance can be more sentimental or emotional, versus physical.

Of course, that's not stopping me from hoping from more steamy times in the subsequent novels.

Another thing I really liked was the writing style and the setup of the perspectives. Right from the beginning, Rutkoski demonstrates a gorgeous writing style. It was like poetry in freestyle - so lush and descriptive and BEAUTIFUL. And something that I was happy to see was that this book is in third person point-of-view, and while it is mostly limited to Kestrel's point-of-view, Rutkoski threw in Arin's point-of-view every few chapters. I like this!

Rutkoski has absolutely no mercy on her characters. She makes both of the protagonists suffer, and in different ways. Arin suffers under the guise of a slave, but he also suffers because he fell in love with a Valorian. Kestrel suffers, because she is constantly pressured to join the military or get married; to always have an escort; to give up her music; and physically, when she is hurt over and over. This is a very "real" part of the book - all the suffering that the two protagonists must endure.

The ending is not what I expected, yet, it makes perfect sense with the story. I know this is a trilogy, so I can't be disappointed. But I really cannot wait to read book two (and book three)! Because that ending... what an ending. Oh, my heart!

What I Did Not Like:

I can't think of anything at the moment - perhaps that I have to wait EVEN LONGER for the next book. That definitely has to be the one drawback.

Would I Recommend It:

Absolutely! If you love novels by Kristin Cashore and Leigh Bardugo will LOVE this novel! And even if you weren't a fan of those authors, or never read anything by them, TRUST ME - you will enjoy this book! Give it a shot!

Rating:

5 stars. This is a 2014 novel, but it is definitely one of my favorite novels of 2013! Now, more please!

A Quiet, Vivid Story
By YA Book Queen
I knew going into The Winner's Curse that this would be a novel worth reading, if only because of how much I loved the creativity featured in Rutkoski's The Shadow Society. But even knowing that, I was still amazed by how outstanding this novel turned out to be. The story revolves around two main characters: Kestral, a Valerian and the daughter of a great military General, and Arin, a Herrani slave whom Kestral buys on impulse at an auction. Kestral is expected to join the military, while Arin must do whatever it takes to survive as one of the Herrani slaves. Despite their different stations in life, Kestral and Arin slowly form a forbidden friendship that could change the fate of their world's future.

Rutkoski excels at painting a vivid picture within her readers' minds – the characters, the world, the culture, everything proved to be easy enough to envision and imagine. But, it was the characters who stole the show. From Kestral's observant and strategic nature to Arin's subtle intelligence and sharp personality, it was easy to root for both of them. Even the side characters were wonderfully developed, and continually intriguing. I went into this expecting a good story, but Rutkoski delivered a quiet, stunning tale that pleasantly surprised me. The Winner's Curse is a surprising, captivating tale of family, love, and honor. This book? It should be on your to-read list. Or, better yet, your bookshelf.

Highlights: The romance is slow, subtle, and almost barely beginning. This story focuses on the intelligence of main characters, rather than their ability to be physical threats. I loved how this story was written in a 3rd person POV, because it allowed Rutkoski to go into detail and really show off the fantasy world she crafted. While this as a quieter story, there are bursts of action-packed moments, strategic manipulations, and a couple surprising revelations. Worldbuilding, characters, story – it was all fantastic.

Lowlights: It has a slightly slow beginning and a couple moments felt slightly rushed, but I have no big issues with this story. The writing style will not be everyone's cup of tea, but I adored it. The ending was pretty brutal, emotionally. It leaves you wanting the sequel, desperately!

An addicting, satisfying, thrill, that is NOT to be missed!!
By Alicia
Ooh, THE WINNER'S CURSE, were do I begin to name the many reasons why I love you, and NEED more of you??? I am still tongue tide when I think about THE WINNER'S CURSE! It is beyond any logical words! It was so refreshing and amazing to read a book like THE WINNER'S CURSE. It was unlike anything I've ever read, and I'm SO glad I gave it a shot when I did, because I was debating, but eventually my curiosity won me over! I tend to steer clear of books that get a lot of hype (Like The 5th Wave ;) I get a little skeptical. But when I received an ARC, and sat down to read the first chapter and see what I thought, and let me tell you, I could not put it down to save my life!! I was captivated by each word, and before I knew it, I was almost finished, and already craving the next book!

There was honestly not one thing I did not like about THE WINNER'S CURSE! It was amazing in so many ways! The writing was elegant and engaging! Marie Rutkoski has crafted the most beautifully captivating, forbidden romance, that had me reading until the wee hours of the morning! I didn't want to put this book down for fear of what was coming next!

I loved the main characters, Kestrel and Arin were so addicting, and perfect in so many ways! They were both so full of life, yet flawed with restraints, by being forced to be tide down to their positions in their very different worlds, and it was so heart breaking. They were able to hold onto their strength, even though they both had to endure the pain and heartache of not having control over their lives! They knew what they wanted in life, but also knew that it could never be!

The romance was unlike ANYTHING I have ever read! I appreciated the romance in this book. And to be honest, there really wasn't that much, yet their was tons of emotions, chemistry, and plenty of desire. But not a lot of actually acting on it. And I really enjoyed that. It was not rushed one bit. It was more then halfway through the book before something actually happened between Kestrel and Arin, but, we didn't go without the romance feels! You could feel the pull and chemistry they had for each other, but also the strong resistance they clung too, for they both knew a Valorianns and a Herrani can never be! This book portrayed a romance as a romance book should. The feels were more real and the desire was stronger then anything I've read, and it felt honest and pure, and not rushed and tainted! Does that make sense? Anyways, I just loved Kestrel and Arin together and they made me want to reread this book as soon as I was done reading it! Seriously, I was thinking about it, but I had too many review books on a deadline, if not for that, I definitely would of reread it immediately! It was just THAT GOOD!!

THE PLOT...

In the thriving, yet ruthless empire, the Valorianns rule over the Herrani. They have been to war and succeeded on taking all the Herrani captive, but instead of killing them, they have enslaved them. Forcing them to be they're maids, cooks, weapon makers, farmers, and whatever else the Valorianns can see useful for them. The Valorianns believe them the superior of the two, and have proved that by taking away their freedom and forcing them to do their bidding's.

The Herrani have no choice but to be they're servant, for it is that, or be tortured and murdered until the Herrani race is extinct! And the Herrani can not allow the Valorianns to murder all of them until there is no more of them left! Because the Herrani have a plan! They have been biding their time, waiting, and slowly building their resistance among the Herrani people, waiting until all is set, and for the perfect time to strike! The Herrani want their freedom, and they're ready to take it back, one way or another!

Kestrel, the daughter of stern General Trajan, the leader of the Valoriann army, is on a routine visit in the towns market, with her best friend Jess when she finds herself at her first auction. It's not just any auction, it's a slave auction! Where Valorianns

Kestrel can't help but to feel drawn to Arin, the slave she bought. Something about him is overpowering and mysterious, and Kestrel is intrigued and curious by his rough around the edges, yet softer, more gentle side, and feels there is more to Arin then what meets the eye. So she slowly starts finding reasons to show him attention, getting to know him for him, and not as her slave. But before Kestrel realizes how deep she's gotten in, she finds herself caught up with feelings she doesn't understand, and definitely doesn't want to admit, for she is Valoriann and he is Herrani. She is the superior of the two, and it is unheard of for the two races to become one. But that's exactly what Kestrel wants, at least deep down inside!

But their is a war brewing within The Herrani and The Valoriann, that will change the world as they know it. One side will have to either succumb or give-in. The Herrani are determined to get their freedom, but The Valoriann are determined to keep them as they are, enslaved and conquered! But when the table turns, and everything they've know is changed, The Herrani will have to decide how far they're really ready to go, while The Valoriann will have to decide what is worth fighting for. And Kestrel and Arin will have to decide where their heart lies and how far their willing to go for what they really want!

Will The Herran win their freedom back from The Valoriann? Will The Valoriann give-in a decide it's not worth fighting for, or will they go to war and risk killing lives on both sides? Will Arin finally see what's most important in life? And will Kestrel see where she really belongs? Well, READ THIS BOOK TO FIND OUT, because it is SOOOO worth it!!! It's a 2014 THAT'S NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

The WINNER'S CURSE is truly hypnotizing with it's originality and magical blend, it's historical background, political intrigue, and a romance so utterly breathtaking and captivating, that it will leave any YA fan or even adult fan, captivated and craving more! You'll be screaming for more of Marie Rutkoski astonishing story telling, heartbreaking situations, with enchanting characters unlike anything that's ever graced the YA gender!!

I will be painfully holding my breath until the next book is released!! The ending was enough to make me scream and rant more then a few times for not having the next book in the series. THE WINNER'S CURSE is something I think ANYONE, no matter what their genre is should read! It's just that freaking AMAZING!!!! Marie Rutkoski, I will be waiting impatiently until the next book arrives in my needy little hands, but until then, I will be banning my head against the wall in anticipation!!!

NOTE: I received an ARC from the Publisher for review. All opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced in any way!
