A Complete Guide to Acupressure: Jin Shin Do, by Iona Marsaa Teeguarden

A Complete Guide to Acupressure fills the need for something in between simplistic acupressure books and complicated acupuncture texts. Now even more complete, this new edition has been updated to include:
o JSD as a tool for aiding recovery from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - a state of hyperarousal following a traumatic experience like an accident, attack, or disaster;
o Anxiety and insomnia as indications of disturbed Shen, or Spirit, with point combinations integrating traditional acupuncture theory with segmental theory;
o The Five Elemental Processes as a practical guide to a harmonious relationship with Nature, both around us and within us;
o JSD acupressure as an adjunct to first aid for athletic injuries in outdoor situations like hiking and wilderness travel.
o A clothes-on technique, Jin Shin Do is the author's unique synthesis of a Japanese acupressure technique, traditional Chinese acupuncture theory, Taoist philosophy, Qigong (breathing exercises), and Western psychological tools. A Complete Guide to Acupressure describes this synthesis in detail, with chapters by Iona and senior Jin Shin Do teachers in the U.S., Canada and Europe. "Jin Shin Do" means "The Way of the Compassionate Spirit," and this book is a treasure house of ways to treat ourselves compassionately.
o Iona Marsaa Teeguarden, M.A., L.M.F.T. has taught Jin Shin Do Acupressure throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe for three decades. The author of the classic Acupressure Way of Health and The Joy of Feeling: Bodymind Acupressure, she is a Diplomate of Asian Bodywork Therapy (NCCAOM), and has been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 1983.

Complete but dense
By Fernando
I bought this bought about a month ago and even though I have not read it completely I am fairly familiar with it now, so here's my review.

I approached the book as a "teach yourself acupressure" guide, being aware of the limitations of this approach. I am acquainted with yoga and meditation techniques, and a just over the average human anatomy knowledge, but I haven't had any contact with traditional chinese medicine so far.

The printing and binding is fairly good. It is paper back but the cover looks resilient. It is printed in quality paper (maybe too white?), which is a plus for a book that is more a look-up manual than a read and store story. The illustrations are black and white, and even though I would like a little bit more of detail some times, they are helpful in general. All the Strange Vessels and Meridians have their points illustrated on a standing human figure, relating to both the major skeletal and muscular body references. Specific points like Meridian source points are illustrated on local figures of hands and feet. Later chapters dealing, for instance, with jaw, head and neck tension also have specific head illustrations to help find the right spot for the points.

The book covers a fairly good amount of theory, as well as giving practical examples to be applied "as-is". My feeling at this point is that there is enough background to understand why the offered release patterns work, and to gain enough insight as to develop your own practice. Furthermore, there are plentiful quotations to other sources, which gives the text a more scientific flavour, and allows the reader to check other opinions.

Now with the downsides. As a total beginner in the subject, I found it difficult to find my way through the book. Different chapters are written by different authors, and while the overall structure of the book seems reasonable, useful knowledge is sometimes scattered accross different sections, or duplicated (better this than spread out...). For instance, chapter 3 explains what seems to be one of the major foundations of the method: Strange Flows. It explains how they regulate Qi and how they interconnect the meridians. However it is not until chapter 4 that the meridians are actually explained. Even then, there are constant references to later chapters 10-21, which not only contain more in-depth explanations of a given meridian, but also general theory which, in my opinion, should be covered earlier in the book.

My biggest critique is with the numbering method itself. The book develops a new numbering system for the points, and it includes the equivalent chinese numbering for cross-reference with other sources, which is a good thing. Early on in the book the basic points of the system are introduced, including their location and function. However, later chapters introduce further points in a non-systematic way. Many specific release patterns include points that are not explained anywhere else than the section of the pattern, and some of them do not even include a textual explanation of their location. This makes me wonder whether the new numbering is useful at all. In any case I find that a complete index with all the points that appear in the book - and not only the basic fifty five points - would be very useful.

All in all, I find the book very interesting, with a lot of content, but lacking a little bit of structure.

Nice book, different approach
By J. Rogers
Good section on theory and very good coveage of specific ailments. I also liked the combining of energy and psychology. Better than most books I have read on the subject.

The suggestions I have are

-a better index (benefits of points not listed)

-more info on preventatives

Too long and boring. More for the very serious student of Jin Shin do.
By Paula Mahinske
Hard to get into. To scientific and long and somewhat boring. Not my favorite book on the subject. More of a text book than a "go to book" for practical. Better for serious students of the practice.Moderately recommended.

The Baron of Grogzwig, by Charles Dickens

The Baron Von Koldwethout, of Grogzwig in Germany, was as likely a young baron as you would wish to see. I needn't say that he lived in a castle, because that's of course; neither need I say that he lived in an old castle; for what German baron ever lived in a new one? There were many strange circumstances connected with this venerable building, among which, not the least startling and mysterious were, that when the wind blew, it rumbled in the chimneys, or even howled among the trees in the neighbouring forest; and that when the moon shone, she found her way through certain small loopholes in the wall, and actually made some parts of the wide halls and galleries quite light, while she left others in gloomy shadow. I believe that one of the baron's ancestors, being short of money, had inserted a dagger in a gentleman who called one night to ask his way, and it was supposed that these miraculous occurrences took place in consequence. And yet I hardly know how that could have been, either, because the baron's ancestor, who was an amiable man, felt very sorry afterwards for having been so rash, and laying violent hands upon a quantity of stone and timber which belonged to a weaker baron, built a chapel as an apology, and so took a receipt from Heaven, in full of all demands.

An engaging, beautifully illustrated, wonderful picturebook.
By Midwest Book Review
The Baron Of Grogzwig is a wonderfully original Charles Dickens ghost story that is adeptly edited into a picturebook format by Shirley Greenway and charmingly illustrated by Rowan Barnes-Murphy. It's the story of young Baron Von Koeldwethout of Grogzwig, Germany, who lives in a fine, old crumbling castle with excellent hunting. But the baron grows discontented with simply doing what he likes every day and decides to get married. He woos the daughter of the Baron Von Swillenhausen and takes up the joys of family life. But by the time he is a fat and hearty forty-eight years of age the baron finds himself saddled with an unhappy wife, thirteen children, and no fortune, feasting, revelry, or hunting! Depressed, the baron decides to end it all. As he sat and thought about his present troubles and the happy days of his bachelorhood, he sees the apparition of the "Genius of Despair and Suicide" before him. Can the baron defeat this ghastly apparition and retain his contented good humor -- or is this the end? An engaging picturebook story, beautifully illustrated and wonderfully told.

The contagion will spread to your wallet!
By Gwyllabrach
You can always depend on a 'Making of' book with Guillermo del Toro's involvement to be stellar. The man just oozes creativity. And this is a great 'Behind the Scenes'-type book that pairs remarkably well with the television series. I was a fan of the original novels and I'm happy to see del Toro and FX develop them for the small screen with a production that rivals most Hollywood movies. With concept art by the incomparable Guy Davis and Keith Thompson (whose art graces the cover!) as well as del Toro regulars Juan Pablo Garcia Tames and Francisco Ruiz Velasco--I'm beside myself with glee. The book also details the progression of The Master and his 'strigoi' underlings along with other beasties I'll let you discover for yourself. Look, if you're a fan of the series or a del Toro groupie or just appreciate the process of making a series of this caliber, check it out. I'll guarantee this will shine in your collection just as it does in mine.
