The Book You need to read after Watching "The Wire"

So Baltimore is pretty much just like Detroit, only much, much worse off. Well-formatted book, with accessible table of contents make this is an five-star rating!

Only problem: book seriously needs an index (all of Kersey's book do). But this book needs an index b/c a lot of the individuals, like former Mayor Kurt Schmoke and Martin O'Malley are such interesting characters and you want to read about their exploits instead of thumbing through the book trying to locate their names.

Pure crap

I am a native Baltimorean and a professor emeritus of political science who has written two books and a number of articles about the city. This book is pure crap. I regret having wasted my money on it. Kersey has a formula that he applies unthinkingly to one city after another. He has created a market niche by posing as a professional racist. I'm not entirely convinced that even he believes the garbage that he sells.

I read this book as a 72 year old to learn info about Billy Cody and was so interested to learn all the history of Kanas and the boarder wars. How is it that I have lived so long and never known any of this??!!..I highly recommend this book to any who are interested in our history..especially mid western and western history. Cody was a part of it all!

Fascinating and compelling narrative nonfiction.

Warren herself points out in the author's note at the end of the book that her focus here was not entirely on Buffalo Bill, but on Bleeding Kansas and the events surrounding Kansas's statehood. And seeing as William Cody spent part of his childhood as well as his teenage years in Kansas at that time, he made a great way to tell the story of what was going on in Kansas at that time. Using Cody's own words as well as those of other family members and witnesses, Warren does a great job of sharing the tensions and conflict that boiled over into bloodshed and terror after Congress gave Kansans the right to decide whether to be a free or slave state. After the death of his older brother, Cody and his family set off for Kansas looking for a place to prosper and forget. But none of them forsaw the conflict that would invade their lives. The invasion of Kansas by slaveholders from Missouri and elsewhere clashed with Cody's father's beliefs and when that became known Cody's father was stabbed. While Isaac Cody survived the stabbing, his stance on slavery forced him away from his family in order to protect them and his family struggled without him. Within three years, Isaac would be dead and Billy would be left at the age of 11 to be the man of the house. But his own restless, wandering nature made it a struggle to stay home.

Written in a compelling style, often times using direct quotes from Billy himself as well as his sister, Julia, and other witnesses, The Boy Who became Buffalo Bill, focuses on Billy's youth, the years leading up to Bleeding Kansas and the events surrounding Billy's life there. While the author does get into his adult life a bit at the end, the focus here is on his teenage years, his involvement in outlaw raids during the Civil War, and his service in the Union Army. It's clear that Warren is more trusting of Cody's own words than many others, and Cody was known to exaggerate and even make things up which makes it hard to know how much of his own version of his life was actually true. But regardless, Warren presents a compelling read, leaving it to the reader to accept or reject Cody's version of events.

I loved this book! This book is both informative and immensely entertaining! I believe that I've learned more history from reading biographies than actual history books; and you'll definitely learn a lot from this wonderful biography of Buffalo Bill Cody! This is a book for all age groups!

Great minimalist novel on a mathematician's life in Japan

This book is de - light - full! I like to read it all at once, and then again, and then again, ... ad infimum. I like the part where the guy is in the woods and he might get bit by a snake and there is a phone nearby with instructions on what to do in exactly this case! Absolutely hilarious and enlightening.

All the basic concepts for understanding this topic are included, though there could be more emphasis on possible areas of confusion; such as the different between leads and wires . This book also suffers from only being pocket sized and having pocket sized tracings, and on pages that depict limb and chest leads the layout could be improved to show that they are separate groups. For a newcomer to this subject you may not find it all that easy, as the explanations may need some practical demonstrations from an accomplished teacher with topics such as the cardiac axis. However this book does avoid the jargon and physiology that can be off putting in most other introductory texts. If this book leaves you with further questions, you would probably also need and indeed benefit from the author s two other titles The ECG in Practice and 100 ECG Problems . This would enable you to improve your skills of interpretation, and the three titles bought over time would provide an adequate inexpensive reference shelf for most health care workers. An excellent and concise intro to the EKG.

I'm a second year medical student and I found this book to be utterly fantastic. Everyone has been told to go out and buy the nearly ubiquitous book by Dubin. In my opinion, this book is vastly superior to Dubin's text. It manages to cover all of the basics of a full 12 lead EKG while explaining each additional piece of data in a step-wise and logical fashion. At no point did I feel like I was being pushed to memorize, but by the time I had finished reading the text (which you can do in one sitting) I felt a true understanding of what I was seeing in the EKG tracings. This book was recommended to me by a faculty member at my university who trained in the British system so I'm assuming it may have a larger audience outside of the U.S.
So in summary, I think this book out performs Dubin's EKG text. Others may disagree as everyone has their own style of learning.

This is a very well written book about A fantastic unusual man ,told from his death bed it tells the story of a most important Radio DJ and his radio career...his personal life and the struggles he had in just living. I once knew this man and he was FANTASTIC!!!!It is a great read and it will touch your heart you may even shed a tear or two....here is a hand to Lou Waters who was able to get Bobby to open his soul to the public...thank you Lou for loving Bobby enough to take on the project of writing his story and for Bobbys beautiful Norma who loved and knew this complicated lovely man. If you knew him you couldn't help but love him and many still do ten years after his passing.

Fun look back at rock radio's golden days

As the mordant maxim byword at the offices of a certain left-wing weekly has it, "If it's bad for the country, it's good for The Nation" (the magazine's circulation has risen 71% since the 2000 election of George Bush). Of course, an alternative theory might emphasize Navasky's sure-handed stewardship of the country's "oldest weekly magazine" over the last 25 years. After editing a prominent 1960s satirical magazine (the Monocle) and working at the New York Times Magazine, Navasky, with his combination of bedrock principle and a light touch, was a perfect fit at the Nation. Unmistakably confined to professional doings (family members are hardly mentioned), this memoir recounts myriad tempests in teapots (and some not so trifling), lawsuits, donnybrooks, controversies and lines drawn in the sand. If the New Republic is where liberals address Washington, the Nation is where liberals talk among themselves. Navasky discusses many of his lively charges and colleagues (Trillin, Ephron, Hitchens, Sontag), and relates his thinking behind some of his most important decisions as an editor. "Journals of opinion are not by themselves going to save the world," Navasky admits, but, in nearly three decades of running The Nation and in four hundred-odd pages here, he remains a tireless evangelist for the idea that the world as we know it—liberal, democratic, and Enlightened—won't be saved without them and the public discourse they foster. Opinion magazines themselves, however, survive on the strength of their editors, or, as Navasky points out, on the reach of their editors' Rolodexes, and, luckily for The Nation, Navasky knows almost everyone. The front-room tour of his charmed rise from the Little Red School House to the publisher's chair includes visits with Bob Guccione, Paul Newman, and J�rgen Habermas. Along the way, Allen Ginsberg sleeps on the floor, formerly blacklisted members of the Hollywood Ten defame each other, and Norman Mailer claims he's never sold out.

He recalls his escapades at Yale Law School, where he started the satirical magazine Monocle, beginning his long and sometimes hilarious efforts at providing lively commentary on national events and staying afloat financially. He recalls his association with rising young writers and commentators, including Calvin Trillin, Nora Ephron, and Ralph Nader, and his experiences as a freelancer, including work for the New York Times. All he learned about the magazine trade, harnessing literary talent, maintaining honest debate about social issues, and keeping the bills paid proved helpful when the chance came to own and operate the Nation, America's oldest weekly magazine. He offers fascinating stories of publishing giants and political personalities, including his magazine opponent William F. Buckley. excellent book

A riveting tale of the world of opinion magazines. Not for everyone, perhaps, but if you have ever been interested in what it takes to publish a magazine, this book portrays it well. But the real selling point is that it's beautifully written. He's funny, clever, bright, and charming. You get a serious look at his life as well as his work and it's for this reason that the book is excellent.

Preserving a National Treasure

This longish chronicle of Mr. Navasky's stewardship of the weekly periodical The Nation is entertaining and satisfying, if a bit too rich in detail. He is an adroit and witty observer and writer, and maintains just enough distance and objectivity as he tells the story of the long-beloved liberal journal of opinion (it was founded in 1865), and how its fate fell into his lap. The magazine couldn't have fallen into more capable hands. A rare commodity, the journal of opinion has a distinguished if rocky history in America, and Navasky capably describes how it survives in a climate permeated by capitalism and the profit motive.

He is anything but a cockeyed optimist; he's been to Harvard Business School, dined with movers and shakers and major philanthropists, and has a good practical head for business; but he has managed to remain a "purist" in the right sense: He stands square on the principle that the editor and the publisher (or benefactor) must not interfere with each other. He has made many famous and influential connections along the way, including with Paul Newman--whose meeting with him, engineered by E. L. Doctorow, makes up one of the more satisfying anecdotes in the book; but he is anything but a name-dropper.

The book tells the story of how Victor Navasky kept the beloved magazine afloat by the force of his wits, always keeping a bemused detachment and a sense of humor, and a seemingly endless series of plausible backup plans. As serious as his subject is--the ability to keep serious and truthful debate available before the thinking public even in the face of well-funded opposition--often strong political opposition--Navasky keeps the tone light and cheery. It's not that he enjoys a good fight; more, that he is a capable navigator, disarming his foes with his intelligence and logic (and undoubtedly, his charm), possessing a good practical sense of what's possible, making his case and usually winning it; and finding ever more resourceful ways to keep the treasured weekly journal alive and even thriving.
