You don't have to be an expert or an advanced user of Excel to appreciate this book.
It has helped me in many situations when I've had a manager waiting on a spreadsheet and I've hit a problem. Clear, well-explained , practical and effective; a must have on every office desk.

Despite the increasing academic interest in populism, we still lack understanding of individual factors contributing to populist voting. One of the main reasons for this is that populism is almost always attached to other ideologies which makes it difficult to isolate factors.

This book draws on an innovative research design by comparing the reasons to vote for six populist parties which differ remarkably in terms of their host ideology in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany. The results show that populist voters are motivated by their dissatisfaction with the functioning of democracy and a desire for more direct democracy. Furthermore it appears that populist parties do not mobilize among one specific social group although deprived groups are generally more susceptible to populist voting. Finally, this study explored why some populist parties persist while others decline. Origins of party formation and how leaders organize their party internally seem the most important factors determining party persistence.

This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of populism, European politics and contemporary political theory.

A surfer lovers perfect romance!

Blue is such a fun surfer lover's romance. Perfect for the summer and beach time, this book will make you want to lay out on the beach and dive right into the ocean. Blue even made me want to hop up on a surfboard and try to catch a wave. (but let's be honest, I'm not sure I would even be able to stand up. I would spend all my time wiping out.) The book mostly takes place on what is called one of the best surfing beaches in Europe.

Iris is refreshing. She is not the type of girl that would attract your average celebrity. Sure, she is pretty. But she is low key and relaxed. I loved that Zeke was so taken with her. It said so much about the type of guy that he is. Because Iris is a quality girl, and it is impressive that an 18 year old guy that is famous and on top of his game notices quality over all the other girls that are throwing themselves at him. I thought it was adorable to see Zeke around his brothers. It was so cute to see that he had been talking to all of them about Iris. They knew who she was. It was just cute to see them all kind of joke around with him and push his buttons to see him react and admit that he liked her. Iris and Zeke are just the kind of young couple that you will love reading about and rooting for.

The secondary characters are also a treat in Blue. All of Zeke's brothers, Iris' best friend, and her ex Daniel all were prominently featured in Blue. I enjoyed getting to know all of them, and seeing their story lines. I can't wait to see them again in the next book. Another pleasant surprise in Blue is how much you will learn about surfing. All of the lingo, and the description and detail about the sport was fantastic! For example, I learned that if I were to try and learn how to surf that the whitewater would be my friend for a very, very long time!

Lisa Glass did a wonderful job with Blue. The writing was fresh, fun and conversational. It was so easy to just let yourself get lost in this cute beachy story for a couple of hours. The characters were delightful and had a rich depth to them. People are not always what they seem and people often have more going on in their lives and in their past that shape them into the person they are today. You learn a lot of assumptions and changed perceptions of the characters throughout the story. If you are looking for a fun, and beyond cute summer surf romance, look no further than Blue!

Looking for that one book to kick off your summer reading? This the book you should pick up!

If you are looking for that one book to kick off your summer reading, Blue by Lisa Glass is the book you should pick up. With Iris and Zeke meeting in a yoga class, in an awkward, but compromising position, there is instant attraction between these two. It drew me in, that's for sure. Both Iris and Zeke are sporty and exude a level of confidence that made them want to know each other more. And as the reader, I wanted to know too.

While there is an immediate attraction and Iris and Zeke are drawn to each other, there is no insta-love here. Readers who are leery about insta-love stories can rest easy as you get to see the characters get to know each other and experience the friendship that begins to turn into more. But both Zeke and Iris are guarded and we begin to understand that their love story might not be so simple after all.

There were instances in Blue that took the story in a more serious direction than I ever expected. It tackles some serious issues (which I can't mention because they can be plot spoilers), and does so in a way that keeps the story from becoming overwhelmed by them.

There are many things that I loved about this book:

*the friendship between Iris and her best friend, Kelly - this added a lot of humor to the book
*the relationship between Zeke and his brother (and the rest of his family) - this explained a lot about Zeke
*reading about Iris and how she grew into this more confident person after having her heart broken by her high-school boyfriend, Daniel
*all of the emphasis on surfing - the rules, the lingo, the surf culture, the surfing lifestyle and the freedom that the characters experienced

And I especially loved reading the descriptions of being out in the ocean and the waves - it was hypnotic. I made me yearn to be in the water. It didn't make me what to go out and try to surf any time soon, but I could easily envision the surfers, in the water, experiencing the thrill of it all.

I fell hard for this book and Iris and Zeke and their story. I would call Blue a true summer read (although you could read it any time of the year). There are other characters in Blue who were interesting enough that their story lines could lead to their own books. I certainly hope that that happens in the future.

Great Reading!

With July just around the corner, Blue is the perfect summer read, with plenty of surfing action, sun, beach and romance.

Iris is at first a very ‘girl next door’ character, which makes it easy to identify with her. She’s heartbroken over breaking up with her boyfriend; she just wants to wallow in her misery and stay holed up in her house. Then she meets a boy who seems too good to be true, and her entire world changes. We get to see Iris reveal new layers of her character and new depths of her surfing talent. She makes great progress through the novel, and blossoms into a poised and committed surfer and a beautiful personality.

The gorgeous boy she meets, Zeke, has done most of his growing up before we get to meet him, but that’s okay, because he is now mature enough to inspire and guide Iris. And he does that wonderfully. The amount of surfing knowledge that Ms. Glass wrote into his character makes him a believable champion, a great sportsman, and a very inspiring individual. He’s just what Iris needs, and that’s why their relationship works so well. It’s worth noting that apart from the external conflicts that hinder their relationship, at least at the beginning, there are also strong inner conflicts that help the reader become even more invested in the story.

I loved how the secondary characters were all well-written, with distinct personalities, and how Ms. Glass created relationships between them that felt very real and genuine. Kelly was the kind of a positive, spunky person I’d love to have for a friend. The interaction between the Francis brothers (and pretty much the entire family) is a joy to watch; and Nanna is a very special individual.

The only thing I’d have liked to see in the story but didn’t is more of the relationship between Saskia and Iris. I liked Saskia from the get-go and I was hoping for the girls to become fast friends. I think if they had, the final conflict would have been even more intense and consequently the resolution even more emotional. However, that’s more of a personal wish than an actual weakness of the story.

The pacing of the novel is flawless, with the last forty pages turning into an utter emotional rollercoaster. The descriptions of surfing, the waves and nature are so breathtaking you can smell the brine and feel the sun on your skin. The language and writing style are equally authentic. Surfing slang and Cornish expressions abound, so I learned quite a few new words.

Regardless of whether you like surfing, or even if you don’t know the first thing about it, you’ll grow to love it after reading Blue.

Lovely and Timely Tale

"The Lioness Pastry Cook" is unlike anything I have ever read. It is at once a tale within a tale of space people, who hear a story, told entirely in rhyme. This is an allegorical tale of how one family in Africa, after suffering misfortunes find a way not only to help themselves out of their despair, but reach outward to all (be they creatures or humans).
I think this speaks quite clearly to the need for humanity to embrace one another, and how a future society might look upon us now, with so many issues such as greed, hunger, the ongoing environmental calamity that is global warming, bigotry, religious zealotry and wonder how we will survive. It is because the story is a tale in which the family is personified by the lions, and their ability to adapt (they are running out of meat and so they start eating vegetables and fruit) that it can feel safer for humans to hear its message. This is of selflessness, and compassion, which will, if these ideals foment, create a more equal society in which all cannot only survive but live without fear or pain.
I commend Mr. La Franca for tackling these issues in a way which is both poetic in style (rather Felliniesque in its manner with the actors, dancers, drums running as narrators throughout the piece) and yet poignant. He had a purpose, which was to, without preaching as a stern task master, entertain leaving with the audience something upon which to chew. A very tasty treat indeed, I recommend this highly and ask others (since it is a very fast paced read) to re-read it to take in all its intricacies for they are sweet, sour and meaty indeed.

An enchanting and meaningful work of magic

A very original book like no other that I've ever read. Its amusing poetic style with the suggestive breaks of drumming between verses makes its reading easy to follow and also stimulates the reader's mind in imagining the scenes as they are narrated. Its endeavour of raising awareness and aid for environmental issues is praiseworthy. All summed up to me it seems a true work of magic

About the Author

Beverly B. Mack is Assistant Professor of African and African-American Studies at the University of Kansas. She is co-editor (with Jean Boyd) of The Collected Works of Nana Asma'u, 1793-1864.

Jean Boyd is former Principal Research Fellow of the Sokoto History Bureau and Research Associate of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She is the author of The Caliph's Sister and Sultan Siddiq Abubakar III.

An important book in Islamic scholarship

This is a realy important book and it is a shame that it is so overlooked. Nana Asma'u was the daughter of Sheikh Usuman dan Fodio, scholar and warrior and sister of the Caliph Muhammad Bello. This book not only describes the Islamic community that thrived in West Africa under Muhammad Bello but also the importance given to education especially the education of women.

In this Nana Asma'u played an especially important role she not only being sister to the Caliph but an important Islamic scholar in her own right. This book details the methodolay used by the Muslim community of West Africa in education and how Islam was spread by educated Muslim women such as Nana Asmau.

This book is a valuable read and one I would recomend to anyone who had an interest in either Islam/Sufism or African history.

Here is the historical, spiritual, and literary portrait of a remarkable 19th-century African Muslim woman. The daughter of the spiritual and political leader of the Sokoto community (Usman Dan Fodio), Nana Asma'u (1793-1864) was a poet, teacher, and role model for Muslim women. She was a scholar of Islam and a key adviser to her father as he struggled to bring Islam to the population of what is now northwestern Nigeria. Her poetry is familiar to Hausa Muslims today, attesting to the power and continued relevance of her convictions and achievements.

About the Author
Laura Pincus Hartman is Vincent de Paul Professor of Business Ethics at DePaul University's Driehaus College of Business and serves as Special Assistant to the University's President with a focus on Haiti. Hartman helped to establish and now chairs the Board of a trilingual elementary school in Haiti, the School of Choice / l'Ecole de Choix. Previously, Hartman was Director of External Partnerships for Zynga.Org, through which Zynga players have contributed more than $14 million toward the both domestic and international social causes. Hartman's work, integrated throughout these endeavors, demonstrates the potential for innovative and profitable partnerships to alleviate poverty while providing measurable value to all stakeholders involved.

Joe DesJardins is Professor in the philosophy department formed jointly by the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University in Minnesota. He presently serves as the Executive Director of the Society for Business Ethics. Among his publications are: An Introduction to Business Ethics (McGraw Hill), Environmental Ethics: An Introduction to Environmental Philosophy (Wadsworth), of Contemporary Issues in Business Ethics, co-editor, with John McCall, (5th Ed, Wadsworth) , and the forthcoming Business, Ethics, and Sustainability: Ethics for the Next Industrial Revolution (Prentice Hall). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and taught for many years at Villanova University before moving to Minnesota.

This reads more like a novel than a textbook

This reads more like a novel than a textbook. Usually at the end of a chapter there is a summary of key terms and what you should have learned from the reading. This book does not have that. The term "Ethics" is like every other word in the book so by the time your done reading the chapter (s), you understand ethics, but not really what the classroom instructors want you to gather from said material. The chapters are endless too. (60-100) pages which makes it more confusing than able to learn from. It is a good book for reading, but not as a textbook.
