just used two things. this book and the 10 dollar "study guide" on the clep website which had no information, but a useful practice test.

I read the 60 pages of info in this, took notes, cut out the flashcards, and took the practice test. all in all maybe 15 total hours of studying. I knew a bit about like hardware and software but mostly encountered new terms and concepts. my score was a 64 and my school required a 50 to pass. Heads up, the test had some newer terms and concepts- hence the usefulness of the clep website overpriced bs.

TLDR this book taught me what was on the majority of the exam. GL

The Fish that Ate the Whale / The Shark and the Sardines

I read the recently published book, The Fish That Ate the Whale, by Rich Cohen, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 2012. While the book was very informative and interesting, I was disappointed that Mr. Cohen did not reference a 1961 book, The Shark and the Sardines, written by Juan Jose' Arevalo, the former President of Guatemala, an elected President overthrown with the help of the US Government and American corporations. The Shark and the Sardines was published by Lyle Stuart, New York. Regretfully, corporations, now international corporations, continue to inflict their will on foreign governments with whom they disagree. Both books are well worth reading.

DD romance with a great mystery!

I enjoyed this book! The story is about two couples, who are friends, and their journey into a DD relationship. But there is a very good mystery that kept me turning the pages until the end! The romance and relationship between the two couples are different but both are worth the journey. The mystery is icing on the cake! Read and enjoy, I certainly did. I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an Advanced Reader Copy.

Cindy inherits her aunt's house, and lives there with her dog Tucker. But when strange things start happening, a mystery weaves through the story that keeps your interest till the very end. Fun role play and love the humor. Naturally my favorite scene happened in Vegas. This was definitely a HOT read!!!!

About the Author

Award-winning author and educational leader, Alan Blankstein served for 25 years as President of the HOPE Foundation, which he founded and whose honorary chair is Nobel Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu. A former “high-risk” youth, Alan began his career in education as a music teacher. He worked for Phi Delta Kappa, March of Dimes, and Solution Tree, which he founded in 1987 and directed for 12 years while launching Professional Learning Communities beginning in the late 1980s. He is the author of the best-selling book Failure Is Not an Option®: Six Principles That Guide Student Achievement in High-Performing Schools, which received the Book of the Year award from Learning Forward. Alan is Senior Editor, lead contributor, and/or author of 18 books, including Excellence Through Equity with Pedro Noguera, (In Press).  He also authored some 20 articles in leading education print including Education Week, Educational Leadership, The Principal, and Executive Educator. Worth the read for educators.

This is a quick read overall, and an excellent resource if your building is considering implementing PLC's. It explains the idea of how to attain the goal of every child meeting standards, how to work and develop teams, identifies common hurdles and offers strategies to deal with them, and addressing and involving all stakeholders. I recommended it to my administrator.

Good book, but not a tutorial

I noticed that many of the reviewers listed above are noted SW testing professionals that have published books themselves. I also noticed that these same professionals tend to supply glowing reviews for each other. I think this might lead to a bit of a bias that could mislead ordinary folks looking for a good reference tool to help them do their job.
I've been in the SW test business for several years and have used Cem Kaner's "Testing Computer Software 2nd Edition" as a bible for many years. Mr. Kaner's "Lessons Learned in Software Testing" is a great help for both rookies and seasoned veterans alike, but mainly for anecdotal wisdom. I wish I had the opportunity to read this book early in my career, it would have prevented some of the painful lessons I've learned about the testing business. At the same time, portions of this book are opinions and observations, and should be read with an open mind, but not read as gospel. I often read sections of this book to reassure myself that my actions/decisions/processes are sound.
This book is not a "how to" guide with sample forms and processes to follow, but a very useful collection of wisdom from some of the best minds in testing. Think of this book as three wise people sharing their knowledge with anyone willing to listen (or ante up the bucks to buy the book).

Every now and again I'll have a question or be thinking about a topic related to software testing and I'll go back to this book. It's amazing (and sometimes scary) that I'll find one or more of the lessons is still very relevant and informative some 15 years later.

Fresh Guidelines for Fresh Coffee

This is an enlightening guidebook to the best practices for roasting. Scott certainly knows roasting and much of this book is geared for the professional roaster. I am not a professional and as a home roaster feel that my Hottop drum roaster offers the minimum specifications to take advantage of most of what Scott is saying. Back to the "enlightening" part, I've only roasted a couple of hundred batches and couldn't really get a handle on the how and why of my roasting process until reading this book. Scott has offered "The Three Commandments of Roasting". I've seen lots of debate about the "Commandments" on HomeBarista.com and many on the forums are put off by Scott's proclamations. Personally, a few foolproof guidelines are just what I needed. It changed my roasting approach dramatically and the truth of what Scott is saying is apparent in my every ristretto.

I believe it has been over 10 years since the last edition of Kenneth David's Home Coffee Roasting. That book and Randy Glass' blog, "Espresso! My Espresso!", have been my primary sources of roasting knowledge. Now Scott's book has moved my comprehension of "third wave" roasting forward.

I'm a Tough Critic

Lots of good information without *too much* fluff. My big complaint is the two or three times that the author says that something is "outside the scope of this book". With the Davids' book at less than $15 and this one at $45, I don't want to hear that something is outside the scope. I would also like to see more roast curves, and have them accompanied by cupping notes. I am a new professional roaster, and this book has definitely moved my knowledge further, but I wouldn't call it my companion. This book will likely sit on the shelf until we need to hire a new employee. It's still a buy, even though my expectations were not met.

FINALLY a book that delivers concise, insightful technical information for coffee roasters!!! We are a family owned coffee shop/roastery and have been roasting for just over a year now. This book has been an exceptional resource. The author has outlined and written this book in a logical, informative manner. The details in this book are what I have been looking for since we opened our doors. We have hired professional consultants and while that was a smart business move, The Coffee Roaster's Companion answers so many technical questions and has helped reinforce that we, as roasters, are on the right track. Excellent book - highly recommend!

How God uses flawed people...

Max Lucado is one of my favorite Christian inspirational authors, and his latest book Cast of Characters: Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God continues to reinforce that opinion. Max has a gift of taking a character or story from the Bible, resetting it in an unusual environment, and then drawing out the application and message. It's wonderful to encounter a common passage and see it in a whole new light.

It's tempting to look at Biblical characters and attribute spiritual qualities to them, to "clean them up" to fit the way God used them. But the reality is that most of them were common people who were deeply flawed in many ways. Despite their failures, God used them in ways that made a huge impact. For instance, Moses was used to lead an entire nation to a land promised to them by God. But he spent many years hiding out in the desert, trying to escape an act of murder he committed. Peter turned his back on Jesus when he was being led to His death, yet he was used to spread the gospel to many nations. And Paul... an avowed enemy of Christianity who became an evangelist after a close encounter with God on a road in Damascus. Thought-out the book, you see that your background and status is irrelevant in terms of how God wants to use you.

On top of his inspirational messages, Lucado does an exceptional job in resetting the stories in ways that make you stop and think. Moses and the burning bush becomes Henry the janitor and the glowing mop bucket. Matthew the tax collector is living the life of a organized crime member, complete with all the bling. Jairus the rabbi becomes Wallace the high ranking official of a religious denomination. Even though the trappings of the story change, the underlying truth remains the same. Each chapter ends with a series of questions for reflection and discussion, so it can easily be used for personal devotions or small group discussions.

This is one of those books that you'll read and reread a number of times depending on whatever particular crisis you might be experiencing. And each time, you'll see facets of God's character that you never noticed or understood before...

Getting inside the mind of God's cast of characters

There's a strange phenomenon that sometimes occurs when we read a book, watch a movie, or have an experience in the course of our daily lives. This phenomenon is often referred to as d�j� vu. D�j� vu is the sense that you've been here, seen this, or had this experience before. It may be hard to put your finger on it, but there is a sense of the familiar. As I stated earlier, there are times we all encounter this when reading a book, especially in the pages of our Bibles. As the stories of Joseph, Job, Peter, Paul, and others Biblical persons unfold, we may relate to their experiences, personality, and character traits. Our life experiences, personality, and character traits that intersect with those of the Biblical persons draw us into their stories and make us feel like we're a part of them. The reason we can so easily relate to them is that they were normal ordinary people like you and me. Like us, they had many faults and flaws. In spite of this, God used them to change the world. This is precisely what Max Lucado is trying to communicate in his new book Cast of Characters.

Max unfolds the stories of various Biblical persons over the course of twenty three chapters. Each chapter has three parts: scripture passage, explanation of the Biblical person(s) in the scripture passage, and study questions. As Max helps the reader relate to the Biblical persons, he offers a message of hope in a God who is able to transform the direction of people's lives, just as He did with and through these Biblical persons who live so many years ago.

It's been quite some time since I've read a Max Lucado title. His work tends to be a departure from the more technical and reference type books that I'm drawn to. I was happy to find that I enjoy Max's writing style just as much as I did many years ago. The strength I see in this book is that he goes to great length to help the reader get inside the minds of these Biblical persons. I felt like I came away from reading this book with a better grasp of the heart and mind of David, Matthew, Lazarus, and others.

The layout of the book makes it ideal for a small group setting or for personal devotional reading. If you've enjoyed other books by Max Lucado, I'm confident you will find this new title to be enjoyable as well. This book would be a perfect gift for the Max Lucado reader in your life during the upcoming Christmas season.

Fantastic and Hard to Put Down!!

It has been a long time since a book has drawn me in as this book has. Max Lucado has done it again. Cast of Characters gives a great down-to-earth characterization of many well known--and not so well known Bible characters.

What was the woman at the well thinking when Jesus asked her for some water? How would a Samaritan woman react to being approached by a Jew during those times? Max Lucado takes these classic Bible stories and adds his own personal spin based on the historical details of the times. He includes people like David, Abigail, John and Paul.

I truly enjoyed this book in it's entirety. Each chapter ends in thought-provoking discussion questions that are truly meant to be shared. I highly recommend that you share this book with your spouse, a close friend, a or a Sunday school group. This book was not meant to be read alone, but to be used as a wonderful study and discussion tool.

This is a fabulous addition to your personal library or a great holiday gift for a friend. I give it 5 stars--hands down!
