Misleading positioning of the content of this book

This is now the second time that this has happened to me with a Rosenfeld Media book: I believe what the content description says, and then end up really disappointed because the book doesn't deliver on the promise at all.

"Playful design" claims that UX professionals can learn from game design to "achieve great things int he real world". However, what John Ferrara delivers is simply a systematic categorisation of different computer game types, and how these game types cater for different audiences, and supposedly achieve different things. In typical UX-book style, this then gets fleshed out with a very large number of examples of various computer games.

Now you will ask: what's so bad about that? Nothing, of course, if you're after learning a little bit more about the various types of computer games out there, and if you're interested in general what computer games want and can achieve.

You won't find much that is useful for UX practitioners though. All the author does is to randomly seed sentences like "As a UX practitioner, you will know that..." or "You will be very familiar with this as a UX professional." Yes, John Ferrara, I am, and I wouldn't mind this, but can you then please continue telling me ways of how I can integrate your 'revelations' into web design?

I guess I should have figured this out before I finished reading: very early in the book, the author quickly dismisses 'gamification' as a misguided idea and not really worth considering, because a game has to be fun and needs to be able to stand on its own. And that is the last time you hear in this book about the idea of taking game elements and using them for different purposes.

If you're after a book that introduces you into the profession of computer game design, and the various game classifications and genres, this is a good book to start, but if you're a UX practitioner like me who just wanted to find a few tips and tricks for using game elements to enhance the stickiness of a site, without developing a full-blown game, then you'll be sorely disappointed.

Excellent book that will help you understand the elements of games and how to design experiences that are useful, usable and fun

As a UX practitioner I found this book to be very educational. It explains how to design experiences with game theory in mind. It answers questions like:

- How do we make experiences as engaging as games?
- What types of rewards attract people to keep coming back?
- What causes people to stop playing or give up?
- What motivates people?
and the list goes on.....

I can use the things I learned in this book for designing games, websites, mobile apps, or even to enhance relationships. I could imagine someone with children using techniques in this book to help their children learn and grow. For example: "Continuous reinforcement works best when new behaviors are first being learned, Variable-ratio schedules produce the fastest rate of response. Fixed-interval schedules produce a burst of activity just around the time a reward is expected. Consider the effects you want to achieve, and select the schedules that best support them." This is just one example of the types of research that you will learn from this book. All of the principles are reinforced by using an example of a game. The examples are used to help explain the topic and associate meaning with the concept being discussed.

Overall I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about human behavior....oh and of course games.

AME Group's book, PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions, was key in my passing the PMP exam on the first attempt and by a substantial margin! I think this book is 'must have' study material. AME Group's (Aileen's) questions and explanations of Best and Wrong answers accelerated the process of understanding content and the inter-relationships of the project management processes. I also used Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep which had some very helpful information that can't be found in the PMBOK guide. However, I found Aileen's questions and solutions to be more representative of the exam than Rita's and much easier to digest. --R. Trojan

Going through Aileen Ellis' AME Group PMP Exam Prep Class and using her PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book was key in my passing the exam on the first try and receiving my PMP Credential. I have looked at several other PMP Exam Prep books and sets of Exam Prep Questions but none of them held up to AME Group's approach. Aileen's catch phrase ;Why the best answer is best and the wrong answers are wrong; accurately describes how she has carefully engineered a learning system that allows the PMP (or CAPM) candidate to place the myriad facts; Knowledge Areas; Process Groups; Inputs, Tools and Techniques, and Outputs; and the PMI Mindset; into an understandable context that greatly facilitates absorbing the PMBOK and thus being able to pass the exam. And, her questions were much more in line with what I saw in my exam than other sets of questions I have seen. In addition to using AME Group's PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book, those fortunate enough to also attend Aileen's PMP (or CAPM) Prep Classes as I did will also benefit from her ability to relate what's in the PMBOK to actual Project Management - sort of a two for the price of one; benefit that also contributes to the very impressive;Pass Rate; enjoyed by her students. Getting the PMP Credential is tough enough. Make it easier by using the best tools and instruction available. --J. Anderson

The book also provides hundreds of questions and answers similar to other exam preparation books. This book, unlike many others, explains why incorrect answers are wrong and provides references directing the reader to additional sources if needed or desired. This book is an excellent way to review and prepare for the Project Management Institute (PMI) � Project Management Professional (PMP) � exam. --Jasson Williams

Less than my expectations for taking an expensive test.

In virtually all professional testing I have done in 40 years of engineering, flying, and professional development, when I have paid this much for a book of test questions, I have an expectation of some of these questions showing up on the actual test. The material in the PMP course is extremely detailed. This practice test book test depth was not nearly detailed enough to prepare for the PMP test. I thought I was prepared by understanding these questions. That was not true. I don't like being negative. But I like even less being led to believe that I was preparing correctly for this expensive test.

Not the greatest but useful.

Nothing wrong with this book. However if you want test questions then I would use the website [...] The reason this is a better option is that it simulates the actual question of the test and gives you PDU's to boot. I found this book really did not help me for the test as much as I wanted it too. I would recommend it a tool to help you study but as a test prep tool not so much. Stick with the InSite test banks prior to your test and you will be fine!

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I mean, I'm twenty-two with a rap sheet longer than my left arm and a very powerful and rich man is standing in front of me offering me the chance at my dream job.
“What's the catch?”

Tabitha Knight is just getting out of a one year relationship that changed the woman she is; she may have loved her ex, but she did not like the person he turned her into. Now that she's free, she is determined to find her self again and cut loose, one alcohol hazed party is just the way to do it... until she wakes up the next morning and realizes she got more than she bargained for.

Erik Dashling is admittedly a little reckless and it has landed him in some trouble on more than one occasion. His latest stunt ends in jail and a job opportunity of a lifetime. A night of partying to celebrate his new path in life brings him face to face with the first woman to ever completely captivate him, and also the one woman who now holds his future in the palm of her hands. Now he must decide if following his heart is worth the risk of losing his once in a lifetime chance at a career he could only have dreamed of before now.

~I couldn't hide who I really am. I am a smart-mouthed witch who has anger issues and a right hook to prove it. If that meant I rolled around in the dirt with the ones he considered scum, then call me the flucking queen of the scum world.~

I knew going into this that it was the start of a new series, that alone should have prepared me for the epic friggin cliffhanger... I wasn't. I totally dropped the ball on this one so I feel it's only right that I warn others. That's not to say you should pass on this book, just be prepared for a little screaming at the end and not the fun, lust induced variety.
Now that my cliffy rant is out of my system, let me just say ~ READ THIS BOOK!! It's a relatively short read, it is a novella after all, and with that we always run the risk of not having enough time to really get to know our characters but that wasn't the case here. The author had no problem fully submerging us into their lives in the little bit of time that we had. These two were wicked hott together, sexy as hell, and funny too; it was an awesome combination, although Tabitha did show some frustrating stubbornness a few times, but I got where she was coming from-she was recently burned and acted accordingly. Now Dash... oohhh I LOVE that man! He doesn't know what it means to give up, he goes after what he wants and won't take no for an answer~he will wickedly seduce a yes out of you weather you want to or not, he may be confused by the feelings Tabitha is bringing out of him but he doesn't run away from them which is a nice change of pace. But damn that ending~seriously dude, WTF am I supposed to do with that?! I can assure you I will be monkey climbing the walls til the next installment comes out. As sadistic as Shantel Tessier has proved herself to be, she has still secured her spot on my One-Click Addiction list with this man... I mean book ;)

I don't know what it is that I feel exactly for her besides lust. But something else is there. I'm not saying I love her or that I want to run off and get married tomorrow. But I do want us to spend a couple of days in my bed and get to know each other better.

DASH is one sexy roller coaster ride. It is told in a dual POV and we get to see Tabatha's and Dash's sides. I love when I read a book in dual POV because you get each person's thoughts and you get to see the pain or the happiness they are feeling right at that moment. I love it as a reader because there are times when I am reading and I am like what is that person thinking. Shantel is a wonderful author and I have loved all that I have read from her. Her writing is amazing, and no matter the story or genre, Shantel has the ability to build a strong and great connection to her characters. She could write a color book and I would still think it's amazing!

This is just the book I needed to read right now; bad boy biker with a big heart who is super sexy, plus a feisty single lady fighting to be independent. I hate cliffhangers but it makes me excited for the next books.
Erik Dashling 'Dash' is a reckless bad boy who is has been in trouble with the law a time or two; speeding and just being reckless. When he is booked into jail for speeding and not pulling over for the police, he thinks this may be the time his father will not be able to bail him out. Instead, he gets the opportunity of a lifetime of his dream job racing motorcycles, something he is very good at.
To celebrate his new job he throws a party and meets Tabatha Knight. Dash has one look at Tabatha and knows she is going to be his girl. He will do anything in his power to have her. Tabatha and Dash have a sexy one night stand and she plans to never see Dash again...until she sees him the next day at her house. Dash's new boss is Tabatha's father. Tabatha is recently single from a toxic relationship. She wants to enjoy being single and free from her ex. She does not want anyone in her way until she has her head on straight and gets over her overprotective crazy ex. Dash has other plans for her and he plans to keep her around for awhile.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast steamy read. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

4 1/2 STARS! CAN'T WAIT FOR VOLUME 2!

I am a huge fan of Shantel Tessier's Undescribable series, so of course I was super excited for a new novella series with her. New characters, with new backgrounds and of course hot sex (since Shantel is known to write some HOT scenes)! And DASH definitely does not disappoint! This is a short novella that will definitely leave you wanting more.

"I look down to the speedometer on my bike and see that I'm doing ninety-two in a sixty-five. Fu**!"

Erik "Dash" Dashling is reckless. He lives life in the fast lane. Getting in trouble with the law for driving way too fast on his bike is just his newest addition to his driving record. But somehow Dash always figures a way out of it. Between his charm, money, and quick talking he usually finds himself getting away with it. This time is no different except someone has stepped in to help him and offered him the chance to race professionally, something he has always wanted. He just has to stop being so reckless off the track.

"I am a smart-mouthed bi**h who has anger issues and a right hook to prove it."

Tabitha Knight is that rich, privileged girl that everyone wishes they could be. But what most don't see is that she is a strong willed, smart mouthed woman who fell for the wrong guy and somewhere along the way lost who she is. And now she is convinced that she will never let that happen again. (I loved her, she has a backbone and I love that) Trying to have a good time and move on she decides to go to a party with her friend. What she didn't expect was to get plastered and wake up the next morning slowly realizing that she slept with someone at the party.

"Just my fu**ing luck! The girl I slept with at my party is the one and only Tabatha Knight. Mr. Knight’s daughter. My new boss!"

After a night of hot sex that leaves Dash knowing he wants to get to know that girl more, he gets up goes to his meeting with his new boss only to find out the girl he wants his Mr. Knights daughter. The passion and chemistry between them is hot, but is that enough to overcome the obstacles in their way? She is off limits for Dash, but she also needs him when her past comes looking to take her back. Can they find their way together, or will it sizzle out before it even begins?

Dash is fast paced from beginning to end, and when it ends be prepared to want more. This is a short novella and you will definitely be left wanting Volume 2… like NOW! I can't wait to see what is next for Dash and Tabitha.
