About the Author

Alistair MacNeill was born in Scotland in 1960. His family moved to South Africa when he was six years old, where he showed a growing interest in writing. He returned to Britian in 1985 to pursue a full-time writing career.

Alistair MacLean, the son of a minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands. In 1941 he joined the Royal Navy. After the war he read English at Glasgow University and became a teacher. Two and a half years spent aboard a wartime cruiser gave him the background for HMS Ulysses, his remarkably successful first novel, published in 1955. He is now recognized as one of the outstanding popular writers of the 20th century, the author of 29 worldwide bestsellers, many of which have been filmed.

Excellent Thriller

Another excellent thriller based on a storyline by Alistair MacLean. It is one of the sries of books telling about the Strike Force One of the UNACO. The action takes place in Europe as a train with a nuclear bomb as a cargo is racing to it's deadly destination, while the UN agents are trying to stop it. An excellent thriller with unexpected twists and a great ending.

Cold War era action drama

This is an "Agency" style novel in the mould of Tom Clancy's Op-Centre (not sure if this came before or after, maybe Alistair MacLean invented the genre?)

By that I mean there is a group of operatives belonging to a shadowy organisation with no lead character and all with fully formed lives and personalities, interacting with different skills working towards a common good.

It is also very Bondesque with Industrialist Villains, Evil Henchmen with odd tastes in pain, beautiful yet deadly women, plenty of weapons and vehicles and a earth shattering evily masterminded scheme in a race against time.

The UNACO Agency concept is far fetched but it doesnt get in the way of a good story, some excellent action which leaves you almost nostalgic for the Cold War era. There are plenty of other novels in the series which are probably worth a look.

Garbage!

I have read ALL of Alistair MacLean's novels, multiple times, and am also a five-time-published author. I don't know who "Alastair MacNeill" is but his writing is horrible and he and the publisher (and anyone else involved in allowing Mr. MacLean's name to be remotely attached to this trash) should be flogged. With all of the good writers out there trying to find publishers, how in the world did this hack get a contract?

About the Author
Robert J. Schilling is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Schilling's teaching interests include digital signal processing, control systems, robotics, nonlinear systems, computer graphics, and C++ and MATLAB programming. His research interests encompass adaptive signal processing, nonlinear system identification, active noise control, and control of robotic manipulators.

Bio: Sandra L. Harris is Associate Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Harris's teaching interests include process control, thermodynamics, and biochemical engineering. Her research interests center around periodic processing, control of systems having varying dead times, and the generation of input signals for efficient process identification.

Good course material but mediocre book; alternate recommendation

I took a course numerical methods in Mechanical Engineering which covered much of the same material. The class text was "Applied Numerical Methods for Engineers" Using MATLAB and C, by Robert J. Schilling and Sandra L. Harris.

I found the Schilling book very tedious. Also the MATLAB code included with teh book was really awful. Some of the codes contained mistakes so that they would produce the wrong answers. Other codes contained mistakes that would generate errors when you tried to run the programs. Other codes from the Schilling text were just ported over from C; the structure was inefficient and hard to follow- not well suited for MATLAB.

The Schilling book didn't encourage the reader to use many MATLAB functions that were built-in. The text tried to explain everything the hard way and was overall a very mediocre book- All the students and Professor in teh class agreed that Schilling's was a very mediocre book. I found it very confusing.

So I finally bought this one [Numerical Methods in Engineering with Matlab, Kiusalaas] on the recommendation of another student. It helped tremendously so I could do the final project and salvage a 'B' from the course. The codes are simpler to follow and more appropriate to MATLAB. It contains a much better explanation of the eigenvalue problems and systems of linear algebraic equations.

It's more practical if you want ot learn to do instead of [Schilling] putzing around getting stuck in minutiae. Or if you might prefer to do something first and then go back for a try at understanding the minutiae later.

I only wish I had bought this book sooner. The Schilling text ["Applied Numerical Methods for Engineers" Using MATLAB and C, by Robert J. Schilling and Sandra L. Harris] sucked. This book [Numerical Methods in Engineering with Matlab, Kiusalaas] was much better for MATLAB users.

About the Author
Shahzad Rizvi was born and raised in a princely state in India. As a child he witnessed India's transition from British colony to independence. Surrounded by poets and literary scholars, he developed his passion for literature at an early age. Often the youngest student in his class, he quickly advanced through school; completing a Masters degree in English by age 23.
Determined to explore the world, he went on to complete doctoral and post-doctoral work in the United States and Europe. Now, a novelist, poet and distinguished scholar on two continents, he lives near Washington D.C.and works in international relations.
He continues to enjoy traveling, reading, and mastering new languages, but storytelling remains his greatest passion. His numerous stories and poems weave intricate tapestries of mystery, intrigue, romance and suspense. His richly textured settings of colonial and modern India thrill readers with a vivid sense of Indian culture and life!

OK....

Good news and bad news.
First, the bad. This book has possibilities, and tries for sweeping scope and emotion. However, the writing is often painfully clich�d and stilted. That may be a result of the differences in how English is spoken here and in India, with different expectations and levels of formality, but whatever the reason, the writing itself was a problem. The story is also rather obvious, with characters that barely rise above caricatures.
But now, the good. The novel covers a lot of the issues which came up during the process of India moving out of Britain's control, and does a good job of explaining them from both sides without unduly demonizing or sanctifying either side. It's clear that the author's sympathies are behind Indian independence, but he does not therefore insist that all Britons who opposed it were automatically bad, or had malign motives. He also touches on the India/Pakistan issue, the role of women, the caste system - all areas which I found informative and fascinating.

So, as literature, it was disappointing; as light reading, or as a primer on that era, it was fine.

But far from being simply a romance between a British Man and an Indian woman, The Last Resident is the Authors love letter to India that is bound to draw you in and fill you with a desire to experience the sounds, tastes and smells that he manifests in the novel.

The the world of "The Last Resident: The Love Story of a British Official and an Indian Princess". nothing is impossible. Love always conquers hate and fate has a way of making it's will come to life.

It is book worth well beyond five stars as is more than a book reinvigorate your love of love but will draw you into your own passion with India.

If you love a great story

If you love a great story; if you love understanding other cultures; if you enjoy characters with whom you can identify, characters you recognize as true to life, then this book is for you. Through the lens of a love story, it takes you into India's transition from a colony to an independent state, seen from the points of view of the British, the Hindus, the Muslims, and the many other groups and sub-groups that make up India's marvelous diversity. You will witness a poignant love scene by moonlight; the pomp and circumstance of official ceremonies; and the complex loyalties that arose out of a colonial relationship in transition. Highly recommended!

The vantage point enjoyed by the author certainly reflects in this "big picture" viewpoint of one of the better known company's growth. Of particular interest is the notion of innovation ( spelt with an "i") dealing with process improvements and Innovation (spelt with an "I") dealing with business model changes. The author provides an interesting discussion on what constitutes innovation and how FedEx defined (or didnt define) it. The rest of the book explains how a 5-dimensional employee base can be created. This discussion is certainly novel and adds some interesting perspective for anyone involved in managing people and/or processes.

Though the book will certainly please any "managerial-type" reader, I was a bit disappointed to see that the author's vast engineering experience was essentially untapped in this book. There is no meaningful discussion on the operational side of "how " FedEx actually implemented innovation....In that sense, the title is a little misleading for an engineering-minded reader. Regardless, this is an excellent read, provides a different perspective on how innovation should be seen, and a broad paradigm that enables developing an employee-base committed to and thriving on innovation. A good read. (It may be interesting to read this book along with the autobiography of Kinko's founder - "Copy This!". FedEx's buying of Kinkos is discussed in this book and for even a casual observer the synergy between these two companies seems real.)

A must read, the book is more than just about FedEx

There is not a manager or executive throughout the world who would not benefit greatly from reading this book. In only 200 pages Madan captures the very essence of what is needed by any business in order to survive and thrive in today's economy.

Through the story of FedEx he both illustrates why companies need to engender a culture of innovation and, also sets out exactly what is needed to execute on that strategy. Any negativity on the part of a reader will have more to do with their own personal doubts or fear of failure, for the ideas are sound and well illustrated.

In the work I do I spend a lot of time reading management and success books, this is one of the best that I have read in a very long time. The linkage between Strategy, People, Process and Systems is as strong as I have ever seen.

High quality publication , lots of large photographs , good drawings including details. This is the first comprehensive book on this Architect so offers
a more complete survey than earlier, slimmer books.The articles tend to be uncritical reviews written by the Architects colleagues simply praising the quality of the work. The project descriptions are very cryptic leaving many questions unanswered. In some ways this book helps retain some of the mystery of the Architect and his very unique buildings. This seems to be a deliberate intent of the authors. However with all the information provided this is much to ponder and each reader can arrive at their own conclusions regarding the design solutions and the Architects methods.

A fascinating investigation of sociotechnical complexities of modern life where nonlinear response, competition, cooperation, growth and randomness meet. West is the author of more technical books, such as his recent "Complex Webs", but here he succeeds in presenting his material in a clear and fun conversation manner, with modern and historical examples, accessible to a reader interested in why the world is uncertain, unequal and unfair. Examples range from extreme statistics for predicting natural catastrophes and power grid failures to population growth that has defied Malthus. Pertinent topics, including tipping points, maximal entropy, and intermittent synchronization are also covered and applied to real world situations in economics, health, the environment, and social behavior. The writing has a wealth of insights and explains the underlying mathematics needed to go beyond the useful, but with limited application, bell shaped normal distribution. The book is a good starting point for those wanting to explore the complexity of our time.

There are like 4 or 5 mini books inside

I couldn't even finish this! Contains spoilers! There are like 4 or 5 mini books inside. I got through the first one really easy and I liked it. But then 1/2 way through the 2nd book I got bored and started flipping through the rest of the book. The heroine literally drives me insane, the hero drives me insane. I usually love stepbrother romances, and I love bad boy alpha males even more. But these 2 were so flipping annoying, wavering back and forth about do I love him, do I love her, we can't do this because we are step siblings. The book could have been written in 200 pages not over 400. And I read the last book just to see how the book ended. And after all of that it's not even really a happy ending. They kind of get back together at the end. It just ended and at their parent's wedding, so it wasn't even really like they were step siblings for the entire book. I really hate giving bad reviews but I can't honestly say I would recommend this to my friends.

• H is a disgusting, unapologetic CHEATER and a nasty �ber manwhore. He flaunts a "floozy" in front of h to hurt her so she will hate him. H sleeps his way through 17+ of the female recruits, including the h.
• h is awful and absolutely annoying. She forgives H way too easily.

~Not even a very good ending!!!

~Book is way too long...470 pages, ugh.

~Writing & editing leave A LOT to be desired.

an ok read, but too long and drawn out

Having served in the US Army, I found the inaccuracies with the ranking and titles annoying as hell as well as some editing issues. I've experienced being among the 1st group of females in basic training within a formerly all male unit/brigade at Ft Dix, and most of Charlie's initial sexual antics were disgusting, outrageous and warranted disciplinary action. For me, the story was too convoluted with the addition of Charlie's father and potential step-sibling situation. Hannah and Charlie were often unlikable to me so I wish their characters had been more developed because they literally kept making the same mistakes over and over again ad naseum. Then at the last 4 pages, they figure their mess out.
