Thorough but not ideal for board review

Too thorough for board review if it's your first time going through it. Since I was studying after work, it took me approximately a week to cover a third of it. By that time I was forgetting what I learned in the beginning. Good for foundation of knowledge, and makes excellent class material. For quick board prep a couple months before your test, not so much. I found quick study guides passed around in residency and doing practice questions were effective.

Basic, Practical, Useful

I consider this a great learning aid for psychiatrists and trainees in psychiatry. Starting with the neurological symptoms and signts, the book continues by covering the most important topics in neurology that psychiatrist should know. Take note that it is not a textbook on neuropsychiatry, but on clinical neurology. That having been said, there is an (unavoidable) overlap with neuropsychiatry, although from how I understand the book, it is not the primary intention of the book.

In some areas, like the dementias, the content is very basic and on the "light side". However, that is the purpose of the book - giving the essentials (without overwhelming the reader). Once the reader has grasped the essentials he or she can study the very useful references the authors give.

After each unit of teaching (so to speak) the authors provide multiple choice questions (MCQ's). Since I find supplementing my own learning (and teaching) with MCQ's very useful, I was very impressed by the addition of MCQ's.

Good Introduction

The "little" books published by this press give good introductions to the subjects they cover. This one does an excellent job of introducing the reader to one of the most important people of the crusade period. Saladin, a Kurd, a brilliant military tactician and scholar is described from his birth, rise to Islamic ruling class, to his encounter with Richard the Lion heart. Middle Eastern people still revere him. Well worth reading.

Two Short Stories in One

The book starts out with a short history of Saladin and his fights against the Christians and the other Muslim groups of the time. It ends with an even shorter story of the Assassins. The author provides a simple link between the two, but it is unsatisfying to me. This one is OK if you know nothing about the times or the participants.

Joyce Bishop holds a Ph.D. in psychology and has taught for more than 20 years, receiving a number of honors, including Teacher of the Year for 1995 and 2000. The seller was great but book was for an individual just going into college! I am starting my nursing clinical and throughout the whole book, there was one page that I learned something new and the rest well i think pure gibberish...not worth buying...

About the Author
Henry Hill began working for the Lucchese crime family in the East New York section of Brooklyn at the age of eleven. His fast pasta sauce recipe and suggestions for antipasto are really good. It's worth the purchase if you're going to work your way through the recipes and taste them all then tweak them to your personal preferences. An offer you can't refuse right?

Great cookbook for.dummies

Was expecting a story for some reason. I didn't read the description and just bought it. To my surprise it was an actual cook book for dummies. My Italian cooking tastes authentic now. It has taste and for someone that has no clue where to start this is the book. Has little foot notes of what better tomatoes to use or how to use garlic and onions the right way etc. So easy!!!! Love it

stat mech for intro physics

In 2007 I used this book as a required supplement for the third semester of our intro physics sequence. I assigned it because of the skimpy coverage of thermodynamics/statmech in the typical intro books (which I think aim to shoehorn intro physics into 2 semesters). I believe that since thermodynamics is central and applicable (more so than, say, Newtonian mechanics), it deserves an enlarged fraction of class time made possible by a three semester sequence. I like the book's approach of actual enumeration (using a supplied computer program) of allowed states in a model system. I'm not sure I would be happy with this book as a stand-alone textbook, as I like to see more chapter-end problems than it supplies. I would use again for my class.

The Australian physiotherapist clinical-researcher David Butler's earlier work in assessing and treating mechanical restrictions of the nervous system, as described in his best-selling book Mobilisation of the Nervous System, has had an enormous influence on manual therapy, world-wide(Butler, 1991). His latest book expands on the developing scientific support for neural mobilization, discussing how manual treatments effect the CNS at the synaptic and molecular level and to evaluate how neurological processing is effected by psychological and physical inputs. What Butler achieves here is a depiction of the CNS in the widest context of neurobiology and its associated research. The integrative model of health care (involving the structural, chemical and emotional triad) is supported with exhaustive but elegantly presented scientific research. The depth of Butler's insights into what manual therapists are doing with and achieving for their clients is astonishing, deserving of detailed study. Both scholar and Yogi, Aurobindo (1872-1950) carefully documented the unfolding of spiritual consciousness starting shortly after his deep revelatory experiences while in prison in 1908. His observations were recently published in a two volume set, The Record of Yoga. Beyond expectations

I didn't expect an easy read. Nothing related to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother is. But I'm finding this book both helpful in understanding their yoga and inspiring. I'm feeling that Debashish Banerji himself is a devotee and yogi. Could be wrong, I guess.

About the Author
Boris Pilnyak is the author of The Naked Year, Mahogany (also published by Ardis), and The Volga Falls to the Caspian Sea. In 1937 he was arrested on charges of counter-revolutionary activities, spying, and terrorism. He was tried on April 21, 1938 (in a proceeding that lasted 15 minutes) and condemned to death.

An unknown modernist masterpiece

This extraordinary book is one that everyone interested in modernist literature should read. The subject is the Civil War in Russia as experienced in the provincial town of Ordinin, in the steppes of Russia, during the year of 1919. The Civil War in Russia was a bloody struggle between the Bolsheviks (Reds), Whites (former tsarist army officers), Blacks (anarchists) and Greens (peasant armies). The town is taken and retaken violently, and the book shows the experiences of individuals from many different social groups, from merchants and nobles to peasants and townspeople.

But that is just the sociological background of the book. The experience of the book itself is something radiant. A sense of nature as profound and always existing outside the passions of men and women punctuates the narrative. The book is divided up into a series of episodes in which different individuals, families, and work or military groups live in Ordinin or surroundings in 1919. The writing is modernist, jumping between points of view and the narrative is not that of a 19th century novel. It is far more exhilarating. You should read it rather than read about it, though.

The translation reads smoothly, although the translator's afterward is not very illuminating. For example, he seems to think that certain characters with the same names are actually the same people. I really don't think that's the case, as part of Pilynak's point is that the Russian people will go on, despite the war. For that reason he has several characters with the same name but with quite different characteristics. In any case, there is also a bibliography of work on Pilnyak.

Super interesting read! I'm not very familiar with Russian literature, but this one was eye opening into the cultural differences and mindsets of Russia at the time that it was written. Brings you on a journey through the trials of a divided Russia, while the people tried their best to establish within themselves a sense of self and culture.
