Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly

Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly: these are adjectives which describe my reading of Dr. Glenn Siniscalchi’s effort to restore apologetics to its proper place in Catholic life.

Siniscalchi’s book is wonderfully succinct, the 274 easy-to-read pages covering major aspects of Thomistic thought on belief in God, the significant contribution which Christianity brought to a pagan world (that every human life is worthy of respect), the importance of using one’s intellect to affirm faith, and the rationality of belief in a benevolent God Who wishes not only to communicate with His creatures, but also to offer them eternal life.

Thoroughly footnoted with a twelve-page bibliography to encourage further reading, Siniscalchi’s book is scholarly yet designed for popular reading, as the divisions into five parts and fifteen chapters suggest. Thus, the book is a one-stop course in a variety of disciplines. The cultural significance of Catholic Christianity—specifically of the crucial role that Catholic institutions such as charities, hospitals, and universities have played over the past two millennia—is simply inspiring and makes one proud to be part of a universal faith based, not on terror or pessimism, but love and hope.

Catholic Christians of any rite (Byzantine, Melkite, Maronite, Roman, etc.) have always appreciated the inherent beauty of the faith. What impresses the reader on finishing Siniscalchi’s book is how logical the Catholic faith is. Siniscalchi destroys atheist claims skillfully and with grace; after all, as he mentions several times, apologetics involves not merely pointing out another’s errors, but doing so in an appropriate and Christ-like manner.

Siniscalchi is a master of identifying logical fallacies in atheist or heterodox opinions, and he addresses those errors in thinking without engaging in ad hominem attacks. The reader can easily understand the deep philosophical ideas being presented because Siniscalchi’s style is, as affirmed above, cogent and lucid, flowing smoothly from one idea to the next (the meaning of the adjective “mellifluous”).
It is no wonder, then, that virtually every page of my copy has been marked with an annotation of something important to remember, something worthy of future discussion, or something simply interesting to investigate in the future.

Two areas in the book’s production need to be addressed. The second edition should correct some annoying typographic errors. Also, although the content of the fifteen chapters is evident from their titles, an index should be created to assist the reader in locating specific terms quickly.

These minor matters aside, I highly recommend Siniscalchi’s work for all, especially high school and college students. In fact, I can see how this book can be the basis for a series of broadcasts on EWTN, videos on YouTube, or a masterly online course (one chapter each week in a fifteen-week course). Siniscalchi should pursue these opportunities to promote his excellent work.

Don't have time to read St. Thomas Aquinas’ massive works? Can’t get to the entire body of Vatican II documents? Don’t have the energy or the eyesight to plow through the Catholic Encyclopedia? Read Siniscalchi’s book instead. A subtitle for the book could be “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Faith but Were Afraid to Ask.”

Important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship

Dr. Siniscalchi's book is an important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship. In Retrieving Apologetics, he argues convincingly for a post-Vatican II role for apologetics, using both papal encyclicals and the documents of the council itself. Vatican II did not obviate the need for apologetics, as some Catholics mistakenly think. Rather, Vatican II opened up new apologetic methods. The council, while breaking the monopoly of the Neo-Scholastic classical method on Catholic apologetics, nevertheless affirmed the classical method's validity in its own sphere of competence. This argument comprises the first part of Siniscalchi's book.

The rest of the book is devoted to updating that classical method to meet the challenges of today. It is here where Siniscalchi particularly shines. Before one can begin to make the case for the truth of the Catholic faith, Siniscalchi rightly argues, apologists must first defend the notion of objective truth against the claims of postmodern relativism. He then updates several Thomistic arguments for God's existence, defending them against the particular challenges of today. He corrects many of the Neo-Scholastic errors in their defense of Christianity - rather than arguing for the truth of Christianity based on an outdated notion of historical reliability of the Gospels, Siniscalchi argues that, based on the totality of the evidence (accepted as evidence by both Catholics and non-believers alike), the hypothesis that Christianity is true outstrips the claims of rival hypotheses that would see Christianity as false. Siniscalchi also develops the relevance of the Catholic faith, especially the via empirica, as a method for defending the truth of Catholicism.

Perhaps the best thing about Retrieving Apologetics, and Sinischalchi's work as a whole, is that, while his passion for the subject is evident, he is unflinchingly fair and charitable. As a scholar, he embodies the Vatican II vision that sees ecumenical dialogue and apologetics as not incompatible. As Siniscalchi himself points out, authentic dialogue requires its participants to seek the truth, not gloss over differences.

An interesting book about the relationship between voltage across cell ...

An interesting book about the relationship between voltage across cell membranes and health. This book is detailed in some areas but rather skimpy in others. It does not really attempt to review the topic thoroughly but mostly focuses on Tennant's biomodulator, its principles of operation and its uses in treating various chronic conditions. It does not discuss similar devices or other well known methods that also aim at modulating cell voltage in order to affect healing although it does mention TENS devices and how they differ from the biomodulator and it does mention the SCENAR device as having a similar waveform output. This book is mostly for those interested in the Tennant biomodulator. Those interested in getting a comprehensive understanding of the subject should probably start with Becker's book - The Body Electric and with Oschman's book - Energy Medicine before reading this book.

Dr. Tennant is a brilliant mind!

Reading Healing is Voltage and watching his videos it is without a doubt that Dr. Jerry Tennant is a brilliant mind.

Having just watched his 2014 Healing is Voltage video update, it is clear that Dr. Tennant has not sat idle since this book was published, but continues to research and develop his paradigm bending system, into a complete holistic method of healing that combines functional medicine with energy medicine.

This novel integrative approach to healing certainly deserves greater attention as it just makes sense.

However part of the problem is that as wonderful as this approach is, Dr. Tennant’s book is not a compelling and engaging read. In fact, it is rather dry and dare I say boring. Perhaps that is why it is titled a handbook (this material in the hands of a professional writer could and really should become a bestseller).

That said. Don’t discount the value of learning more about this superb method as it could possibly change your health and your life. And with chronic disease on the rise, and the current standard of care woefully inadequate, we need new strategies such as this.

From the perspective of one who uses SCENAR...

I own and make use of about a dozen different SCENAR devices, so my thoughts about Dr. Tennant's book come from the perspective of one who has a great deal of experience actually putting his concepts and information to practical use.

First, the cons:

There is really only one major con, and that's already been discussed to death. The book formatting is not well done. OK, granted, it isn't the prettiest piece of work. That being said, it is certainly not so bad as to make the information unusable by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, quite the contrary is true, which I'll touch on in a moment.

Another reviewer suggested waiting until a second edition with improved formatting gets published. You could take that route if you want to. I suppose it just depends on how badly you need the information. Is it really worth allowing your health and your health care to continue to degenerate by not having this information, just so you can wait for a prettier format to come out? You'll have to decide that for yourself, but I know which way I would vote.

Here's a little advice for those who got completely hung up on the book's formatting issues and wrote caustic reviews because of them. If you're going to rip someone a new one for using less than perfect language skills, make sure your critique isn't written so poorly that you look functionally illiterate. Criticisms about someone else's use of language carry far more credibility when they aren't themselves filled with typographical errors, words used improperly, and sentences that have poor structure, worse grammar, and incorrect or non-existent punctuation. Something about glass houses and throwing stones comes to mind here.

Now, the Pros:

Dr. Tennant's book covers information that is right at the edge of medical science. As another reviewer mentioned, there are doubtless many doctors who would call this quackery, not because it is quackery, but because it's so far out on the leading edge that most mainstream medical people have had no exposure to it yet. Given our current medical police state, it's unlikely they will get any substantial exposure to this information from mainstream sources any time soon.

Let's be honest, the idea that electrical micro-currents play a major role in the health of the body is not something any pharmaceutical company can turn into a drug and patent at $10 per pill. If it can't be turned into a patented drug, it won't make it into the curriculum of any medical college. There will be no ongoing medical education seminars that discuss it. No pharmaceutical rep. is going to take a doctor out for free lunches or on paid retreats to Rio or the Bahamas to discuss it. And if the doctors don't have any information about it, what else are they to think when suddenly confronted with the whole concept? Quackery.

To be versed in this branch of research a doctor would have to go out of his or her way to find and evaluate the information. This is difficult for many reasons, not least among them being that the lion's share of the research and experimentation on using these micro-currents for restoring and maintaining health has been done in Russia. Most of the data is still in Russian, and the quality of translations for the little that has been translated is extremely poor. In fact, if you view or read these translations, most of them border on being incomprehensible. The translations are so poor as to make them useless to the English speaking reader. Contrast this to the less than optimal formatting of this book. Is the book better or poorer than the Russian translations? Bad formatting notwithstanding, this book is a thousand times easier to make sense out of than the bad translations of the Russian materials.

Add to this the fact that any doctor (at least in the US) who attempts to incorporate these principles into professional practice will lose their medical license quick, fast, and in a hurry. Everyone who has read this book or seen Dr. Tennant's video presentations will have noted that he scrupulously mentions at the outset that the information he is about to present is coming from Jerry Tennant, the minister, and Jerry Tennant, the researcher, but not from Dr. Jerry Tennant, the medical doctor. He has to present the information in this way because if he offered it as professional medical advice, regardless of how true or how beneficial it might be, his medical license would be revoked immediately. So will the license of any other doctor who dares to offer a treatment other than drugging, cutting or irradiating.

Anyone who doubts this need only go to the FDA's own website and peruse their online list of warning letters they've issued to those making what the FDA says are false medical claims. Case in point, Dr. Andrew Weil, a famous, Harvard trained physician was sent such a letter just last year. The FDA threatened Dr. Weil with fines, seizure of property, and criminal prosecution and imprisonment because he dared suggest that some of the supplements he markets might help support the immune system, which, in turn, might help the body protect itself from colds and influenza. Wow! What a medically irresponsible concept - that we might actually be able to support our immune systems (using herbs and vitamins which have a long and clear history in peer-reviewed studies of supporting the immune system,) and that a healthy immune system might actually help prevent illness! Send that medical heretic to the gallows!

So I do not blame the rank and file doctors for not having any working knowledge of the subject matter of Dr. Tennant's book. Their medical practices are directly under the control of the pharmaceutical industry and its Gestapo-esque enforcement arms, otherwise known as the FDA and the AMA. Doctors can only deal with the information they have, and they are only allowed to have the information the Pharma-Nazis say they can have.

To Dr. Tennant's credit, he has managed to step outside this restrictive Pharma-Nazi box and provide a great deal of information in this area of research to us laymen. I don't read Russian, and I don't speak medical jargon particularly well, so Dr. Tennant's book is a treasure trove of information I might not otherwise have had access to.

There are other books that deal with electricity and health, such as The Body Electric. But most of these books are fairly old. The material in Tennant's book integrates the newest in medical knowledge with this body of research coming largely out of Russia. As I noted up front, I have and use about a dozen different SCENAR devices, all of which are produced in Russia. In learning to use these devices I have been limited in large part to using extremely poor English translations of both written and video materials from their Russian originals. I learned far more from Dr. Tennant's book than I have from all of those poorly translated sources combined. Many things about the use of SCENAR devices I learned through trial and error. I figured out what worked, but I didn't always understand why it worked. After reading Dr. Tennant's book, I now understand why things work as they do.

So, is the book formatting ugly? Sure, but it's certainly still very understandable. It's far more understandable than anything you'll find translated from Russian into whatever language you speak. And I can also say that correctly using these devices has done wonders for my health, the health of my family, and for many with whom I have shared them. I wish I'd had this book years ago as a reference. It would have saved me a great deal of time in the learning curve.

Dr. Tennant has released a new book specifically targeting the use of SCENAR and eye problems. I have not seen it, but based on reviews it is my understanding that it has the same poor formatting problems. While I understand that he was essentially a first time publisher when he wrote the book currently under consideration, and that he had some unexpected problems with the formatting because he was new to using the writing software, and it did not convert as cleanly as expected, etc., I am at a loss as to why a second book would come out equally poorly in terms of formatting. Dr. Tennant, once is a mistake. Twice is carelessness. You should produce a better product if you want to continue selling books to the public. Please, make the effort. Your work is too important to be shot down by carelessness.

This has a lot of good and useful infoirmation that is relevant. Sometimes it does get a little tough to read because of the higher education language, but if you can get past it, it is a very helpful book.

Shaykh Ibrahim Niass is the only Tijani Shaykh to ever publish a Tafsir of Quran in its entirety. He completed the entire Tafsir of Quran between 10 and 12 times throughout his life, in public. Most of the times he would engage in the Tafsir, it would be in the Wolof language, but 2 or 3 times he did the entire Tafsir in the Arabic language for the benefit of his non-wolof speaking Murids (Students). The very last time he did the entire Tafsir in public, was in the year 1963 and it was recorded on cassette tape. One of his senior students from Mauritania named Shaykh Muhammad Wuld' Abdallah al-Jayjuba was present for all of his Tafsir readings and took the great task of transcribing the final recorded Tafsir into book form. It took him over 30 years to edit and check all of the Hadith and sources that Mawlana Shaykh Ibrahim Niass used in the Tafsir. The total number of Hadith that Shaykh Ibrahim mentioned in the Quran are over 6000. Shaykh Ibrahim Niass is known to have completed (Khatmul-Quran) recitation of the entire Quran twice a week. In one of his famous poems he beseeches Allah to "Make the memorization of Quran his Karama (Miracle)." When Shaykh Ibrahim Niass wanted to publicly give Tafsir Quran for the first time, he requested from his older brother to borrow his copy of Tafsir Jalalayn. That request was refused and Shaykh Ibrahim said...."I only ask for Tafsir Jalalayn as a formality and Adab" In other words, he did not need it. (In those days, the Shuyukh would borrow Tafsir from each-other because it was so rare to have it in a book form) In Reality, Shaykh Ibrahim Niass did not learn Tafsir from anyone besides Allah himself. His brother sent spies to listen to SHaykh Ibrahims Tafsir and report back as to what he was saying since he did not have the Tafsir Jalalayn to help....The spies reported back that what they heard from Shaykh Ibrahim was so amazing that they could not stay away. They said that they heard knowledge that even the Shaykhs father did not have or explain before. They testified that Shaykh Ibrahim was indeed a Master without comparison. This Tafsir is a Jewel that contains the meanings of the Zahir (Outward) and Batin (Inward/Hidden) explanation of the Quran. Our Master and Seal of Muhammadan Sainthood Mawlana Shaykh Ahmed Tijani as-Sharriff has said in his Jawahir al-Ma'ni...."The Zahir and Batin meanings of Quran are Haq (Truth) and they don't contradict each-other." There is something fascinating, almost magical, about the ability to speak. Though it is a common miracle played out each day, we are a long way from understanding the mysteries of language. Linguists have spent decades trying to unlock the codes of communication and have determined that human speech has very special properties that allow us to communicate at a rate 3 to 10 times faster than we could otherwise.

There is more to language than speech, however, and anthropologists have spent as much time considering the links between culture and perception. Teachers must have the skills to both understand and build on the language of their students. Through understanding students' language, teachers hold the key to understanding their learning.

TEXT FOCUS

This reader is designed to take teachers into the domains of linguists and anthropologists. We believe it is important to read the studies of researchers who have shaped our understanding of how we develop language and use it to communicate meaning. But it is equally important to take that knowledge into the classroom, exploring how language can be used for genuine learning, for sharing understanding with others, and for delighting in the magic of language. We have included many studies of language from classrooms, written by teachers. These stories help us all understand how language develops and changes over time—and how this knowledge can help us change classroom practice for the better.

To take the dialogue further, we invited three language researchers to tell us more about the process of their work—and, beyond their published research, what they are working on now, what motivates their research, and how they link it to their teaching lives. Our interviews with Shirley Brice Heath, Deborah Tannen, and Karen Gallas challenge us to engage in a "passion for the ordinary," exploring closely what is occurring all around us.

In A Map of the World, (1994; New York: Doubleday) Jane Hamilton writes about a two-year-old child, Lizzie, who is just learning to speak:

She was just beginning to speak in short sentences. She was at the juncture in her baby-
hood when it was possible she knew everything worth knowing. She understood the
texture of her family; she understood the territory and rage and love, although she
couldn't say much more than ball and moo, I want, pretty girl, and bad dog. As her
language shaped her experience and limited her ideas, she would probably lose most
of her wisdom for a time. . . Lizzie, at two, was on the brink, between stations. It was
tempting to think that if only they could speak, infants could take us back to their
beginning, to the forces of their becoming; they could tell us about patience, about
waiting and waiting in the dark. (p. 27)

The pieces in this reader can help give us a language to speak about language. We can understand that feeling a toddler has of losing knowledge for a time. Some of these readings will challenge you—as they have challenged us—to rethink some of your most cherished beliefs about language, learning, and culture. Learning about language has taught us much about patience, about waiting and listening closely to students so we can grasp multiple meanings beneath the words they use.

TEXT ORGANIZATION

Throughout this book we invite you to become a researcher of language in classrooms. We give guidance and many examples of teachers researching the language of their students. We've peppered the text with examples from novice teacher researchers who, like you, are just learning to analyze language—everything from purchasing tape recorders to coding tape transcripts to noting the way a head is held when someone laughs. We believe passionately that teachers can understand most deeply the lives and learning of their students if they are researchers within their own classrooms.

After the introduction, the book is divided into three parts. These sections represent different "stations" of knowledge classroom teachers need to move through as they work with their students. Part I, Historical Perspectives and Landmark Studies, highlights major theorists who have shaped our understanding of how language is acquired. Teachers need to know the wide range of language development that is normal. Too often, differences within this wide range are equated in schools with deficiencies.

Part II, Talk in Schools, is filled with examples of how teachers can change curriculum to support oral language development, as well as link oral language development to written language. In this section, teachers will see ways to listen carefully in the classroom, delight in the language communities they are a part of, and also learn to assess talk in the classroom in careful, systematic ways.

Part III, Sociocultural and Personal Perspectives, tackles some of the complex issues of language and culture. Language is indeed a social construction, and does not exist in a vacuum. As our society becomes more diverse, it is even more important for teachers to understand how that diversity will be expressed in students' language.

Sprinkled throughout the text are "Teacher Research Extensions"—examples of teachers applying the theories of language in the book to their own classrooms as they complete research studies.

We hope you learn important concepts and theories about language within these pages; however, we know the best learning, about your students' "territories and rages and loves," can come only as you learn to listen to them closely and patiently. We hope you enjoy this reader as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Our aim is to bring us all to a new place in understanding, awareness, and celebration of the language our students use.

About the Author
Peter M. Bernstein received his master's in Social Psychology, Department of Sociology, from San Jose State University and his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from International University. He completed a professional certification program in Reichian therapy with Gerald Frank, DC, and received post-doctoral recognition from the American Psychotherapy Association as a Diplomate and Fellow. Fomerly the Clinical Director of Center Point Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs, Dr. Bernstein has been in private practice since 1974 as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and is the founder and director of the Bernstein Institute for Integrative Psychotherapy and Trauma Treatment. He is the creator of Reichian Myofascial Release Therapy (RMFR), a new modality to treat physical and emotional pain and trauma. Dr. Bernstein is the author of numerous published articles and has led a wide variety of workshops for professionals, including resiliency and secondary trauma training for case workers and clinical staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs. He helped found and continues to be the moving force behind Sonoma Coast Trauma Treatment, a non-profit foundation dedicated to healing combat-related trauma for veterans, service members and their families. Perfectly put!

This book is excellent. I have suffered from trauma in my life an have always been confused in HOW it effected me. Although I always knew there was a definite effect. This book is written so well, an so easy to read. It is by far one of the best books I have ever read on the subject. I know some people have a hard time " gearing up " to read wordy, self help books or books relating to the human psyche. At only 118 pages what do you have to lose? I suggest this to anyone suffering from Trauma or anyone with a loved one who suffers. I think it gives the reader insight into the how/why the people they love behave the way the do. Just a ton of insight into how these types of experiences effect us and the ones we love. Thank you Dr. Bernstein. I am beyond grateful for this book.

readable and practical, a book to pass along to others

Dr. Peter Bernstein has written a clear and helpful primer on the subject of trauma. His declared focus for the book is "to help the average person better understand trauma and what steps can be taken to heal from its devastating effects" (p. i). He cites examples from his practice as a psychotherapist for over forty years, as well as his own personal experience with trauma, to illustrate the nature of trauma—its causes, symptoms, and long-term destructive effects on the lives and relationships of those subjected to sudden or developmental injuries. Dr. Bernstein makes a good case for the need for healing the body as well as the mind from the effects of trauma, as energy trapped in the body during the stress response seeks release in various dysfunctional ways. His treatment solution combines talk therapy with body massage and stretching that specifically targets muscles and fascia where toxic energy has been trapped, an adaptation of traditional Reichian therapy he calls Reichian myofascial release therapy (RMFR).

A unique feature of the book is its particular emphasis on the traumatic injuries sustained by our military personnel and tragically overlooked in a vast number of cases. Emotional and psychological harm sustained in combat or in the hyper-vigilance necessary to stay alive in a war zone remains trapped in the body and causes confusion and misery for those men and women returning home and attempting to reenter civilian life. Dr. Bernstein puts forth a passionate and convincing argument that their families, and society as a whole, will benefit from giving these injured veterans immediate and compassionate treatment for their invisible wounds.

I recommend this book for anyone who suffers from the lingering effects of unresolved trauma (and who does not?) as well as friends and loved ones of those who have been traumatized. The author goes into enough detail to thoroughly explain the mechanism of trauma and the interconnectedness of one's mind, body, spirit, and psyche, without overwhelming the lay reader. Moreover, he offers practical treatment options supported by real case successes from his professional practice.
