Unique Memoir

This memoir is NOT the dull, chronological, common autobiography. Indeed, the reflective sketches are a complete and welcome departure. I've never read a more inspirational autobiography. I've written down a number of quotes from the book to share with others, some of them from poems Virginia McKenna has written herself.
Ms. McKenna has traveled the world, first as a child, then as a renowned thespian and in recent years as a leader in animal and human welfare causes. She touches upon all areas of her life in which the reader could be interested: her childhood growing up in England and South Africa, a long and impressive stage and film career, her blissful marriage to actor/filmmaker Bill Travers, the founding of Zoo Check (later the Born Free Foundation), and affectionate portraits of those she's known. It is full of vibrant photographs that chronicle Ms. McKenna's life and travels.
Anything you might have wondered about Ms. McKenna is covered. What was it like working with lions? How did she gradually withdraw from acting? What were George and Joy Adamson like? What was her role in the story of Christian the lion? Lots more.
It's not a "tell-all" with lots of bad things said about the people in her life. That would be out of character. Most of her words about others are warm and often extremely loving, but she isn't afraid to tactfully tell the truth about unfortunate experiences, either.
The publisher seems to have spared no expense in the printing. I find many autobiographies are overlong and printed on cheaper paper, with all photographs in black and white. This book has glossy paper and photographs throughout the text as a more effective visual. Between the descriptions and the photographs on the opposite pages, I had no trouble picturing anything.
I'm shocked to see that I am the first reviewer for this book. I hope there are many more.

What a great and inspirational read! We need more people like Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers in the world! I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in animals and their welfare. Mark

Great Book; Unsatisfactory Service

The book came in 2 parts, with the preface and part of the first chapter neatly tucked into the front of the book, and not bound. Because it was an international shipment, I did not want to go through the hassle of returning it. The book itself is reflective, beautifully written, and the story of a rich, compassionate life.
